Raven's Pass wins Classic as Curlin falters
By Tom Krish | 26 Oct 2008 |
John Gosden-trained Raven's Pass has turned the corner. The Elusive Quality colt had a frustrating summer chasing Henrythenavigator. He broke into the win column in the Q E II Stakes at Ascot last month. Racing for the first time on a surface other than grass, Raven's Pass, ridden for the first time by Frankie Dettori, roared past the front horses late in the lane and won the BC Classic from Henrythenavigator.
Curlin was fifth and made a sweeping move to wrest the lead coming into the final turn and was immediately tackled by Henrythenavigator. Curlin beat a hasty retreat. Henry hit the front with Tiago and Raven's Pass in chase. Dettori made his famous flying dismount.
The day began with Frankie Dettori running unto road trouble on Sixties Icon, the even money favorite. The BC Marathon was taken by Muhannak on whom Pat Smullen rode a judicious race.
In the second race, the BC Turf Sprint, Diabolical and Dettori had the lead in the waning yards when Desert Code came calling and snatched the race in the shadow of the wire. Richard Migliore rode the 30-1 winner who is trained by David Hoffmans.
In the third race, the Dirt Mile, Well Armed, Aaron Gryder up, was the rage. Well Armed sat fifth and started sending out distress signals three furlongs from home. Albertus Maximus, with Garrett Gomez, saved ground, came into the lane in a ground-saving mode and swept past those in front.
Next came the BC Turf Mile in which the fans refused to look beyond Goldikova, the French filly who had been chasing Zarkava, Olivier Peslier sat third and second, surged to the lead early in the lane and ran away. Goldikova was the 9-5 choice. Kip Deville, winner
of this race last year, was second.
Midshipman took the lead before the final turn and held on tenaciously down the stretch.in the BC Juvenile Dirt. That was Gomez's third BC winner.
Donativum gave John Gosdsn and Frankie Dettori gave a well-deserved win in the BC Juvenile Turf mile. Donativum beat Westphalia in a tight finish.
Midnight Lite was 8th and last until 600 metres from home in the BC Sprint. In a matter of moments, Midnight Lute went from last to first. It was the fourth BC winner for Garrett Gomez. Midnight Lute, from the Bob Baffert uard, was getting an encore in the Sprint.
Conduit and Ryan Moore came from far behind to catch Eagle Mountain late in the lane in the 2400-metre BC turf. Soldier of Fortune raced jiust behind Red Rock Canyon, had the lead in the last turn and threw in the towel when challenged. Eagle Mountain took command and Conduit came on with less than a furlong left. Conduit's late thrust was too much for Eagle Mountain. Ryan Moore left for the airport to board a flight to Paris.
