Trainer Irfan Ghatala had much to celebrate when he saw the seven year old Dinesa winning The Karnataka Police Sprint Trophy, the feature event in Friday's race card at Bangalore. The race failed to attract the top sprinting talent available at this centre, and this resulted in a moderate set of ten class I sprinters facing the starter. On past juvenile form, Ganapathy's Own Voice had the credentials to run away with this race. This horse had been outstanding over sprints, and had clocked smart timings during the summer season. He had run twice over seven furlongs during the current season, and had performed miserably. Own Voice was reverting to a sprint on Friday, and his supporters were optimistic about his capabilities. They backed him down to even money.In The Zone was fancied quietly at 4/1, while the others were backable at longer odds. The result of this race confirmed the fact that it needs a very good three year old to win in class I. A horse needs to have current form and fitness to score at this level. Own Voice had poor form and was looking pretty ordinary in the parade ring. It was Mercurial who was taken to the front, and made to set a decent pace ahead of In The Zone, Logans Run, Dinesa and Own Voice. The other five horses were being niggled to stay in touch with the front-runners. Mercurial shortened his strides near the two furlong post and gave way to In The Zone. Dinesa was a couple of lengths behind in third, while Logans Run and Own Voice were produced on the centre of the track. The scene altered completely thereafter. Vinod Shinde pulled out his stick and urged Dinesa to lengthen his strides. Dinesa responded brilliantly while taking over the running near the distance post, and kept going to win from his late finishing stablemate Logans Run. In The Zone finished a close third. Own Voice was seen to be plodding at the end and ended a dismal sixth. The handicapper seems to have got the measure of Own Voice, and this three year old should be left alone from a betting perspective. Dinesa was the oldest horse in the race, and his trainer has to be complimented for this performance by the winner. Irfan had earlier led-in the winner of The Ashoka Chakra Cup, a terms race for three year olds. Kyles Of Bute and Timeless Treasure were the two market leaders in a small field of six acceptors. A late surge of money on Timeless Treasure saw this Razeen gelding being backed down to odds-on favouritism. Irfan Ghatala's Firezone led on the rails and showed the way to Glorious Princess and Blushing Beam. The two fancied runners were being held back for a final assault. Kyles Of Bute was the first one to make his move from the back, and joined issue with Firezone as they straightened for home. Jockey De Souza had plenty of reserves and Firezone was was seen to be getting stronger with each stride. Kyles Of Bute faded away from the picture and was finally pipped by Timeless Treasure for the runner-up berth. The latter ran below form and failed to respond to his jockey's urgings. Firezone has shown good improvement and can be earmarked for another success in open company. Kyles Of Bute found today's trip a trifle long for his liking. The third trophy event in the day's card was The Topmost Cup . This well endowed race for maiden two year olds attracted some nice looking and well bred babies. Ganapathy's Mystic Quest was installed as the public choice, whilst Darius Byramji's Alacrity had his own group of loyal supporters. The favourite had the benefit of an earlier outing and was reported to be working well. Alacrity was the one who stood out on paddock looks. He looked like a mature three year old and was on his toes. He is a well conformed horse, and any improvement from here shall see him being propelled into the big league. Suraj Narredu was content to allow Alacrity to settle behind Mystic Quest in the backstretch ,before bringing him into the fray as they turned for home. It ceased to be a race thereafter, as Alacrity bounded away from the favourite and won with authority.Noble Sacrifice got up on the last stride to nose out Tanzanite, and saved place money for her supporters. The well bred Corleone ran erratically ,and his jockey had a tough time controlling him. Corleone seems to have a problem with his mouth and his trainer needs to give him time to settle down. All the above mentioned horses are capable of winning their maiden races after this outing. The resumption of racing after a break of a fortnight did not go kindly for the punters. It was an afternoon of upsets with only two favourites winning in a well filled card of eight events. Padmanabhan's Hill Of Grace and Dhariwals Applique were the piping hot favourites in the two divisions of a class III race over seven furlongs. Both were quoted at a miserly 45/100, and both won in identical fashion. Hill Of Grace ran away from Supreme Splendour and Leopardino, whilst Applique was driven to an easy victory over Super Sha and Sun Zone. The beaten brigade in both these races were plodding at the end, and it is difficult to envisage a win for any of them in the near future. Habib Khan's Royal Amber ran the poorest race of his career, when he finished off the board in a class II event. Ruzzan rode Aquitaine to a start-to-finish victory in this event, and won comfortably from Cart Wheel and Reflection Of Gold. Jockey De Souza was working hard on Royal Amber, but the favourite was lethargic throughout the race. He plodded-on to be a poor fifth. The trainer needs to give him time to get him back into his known form. Gampu and Zaios were the other winners during the afternoon. Both scored comfortably at nourishing odds. Cindy Girl was unlucky in Gampu's win, as she recieved a check in the early stages of the race and dropped to the rear of the field. She came with a late bid and finished a length and a half behind the winner. She is ready to strike in a similar set . Brother In Arms was unfortunate to cross swords with Zaios, who ran one of the best races of his long career.
