Indian Blessing Favoured in Saratoga's Test Stakes

By Tom Krish | 02 Aug 2008 |

The Glorious Goodwood meeting ends on Saturday. The Grade I Nassau Stakes is the feature and the Bluesquare Stewards' Cup heads the supporting card.

Galway in Ireland runs its festival until Sunday and there are several Graded races in America over the weekend. Action shifts to Chicago next weekend when Arlington Park hosts three Grade I races on August 9.

Lush Lashes is the favourite at 5-4 in the Nassau Stakes. It is over one mile one furlong and 192 yards. Put in metric terms, it is about 2,000 metres and it is a race for fillies and mares. Lush Lashes won the Musidora at York and flopped in the Oaks at Epsom Downs. She rebounded with a going-away win in Royal Ascot's Coronation Stakes. Kevin Manning rides the Jim Bolger-trained filly.

Aidan O'Briwn sends out Halfway to Heaven who, after running second to Zarkava in the French 1000 Guineas, came away victorious in the Irish equivalent. To be ridden by John Murtagh, Halfway To Heaven, if she wins, would give trainer O'Brien his 17th Group I win this year. Halfway To Heaven, a Pivotal filly, has not run since landing the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh.

Sir Henry Cecil's Passage of Time made a welcome return to winning form when beating Bankable at Newbury. She is now four and her recent win suggested that there's more to come. Muthabara and Heaven Sent are in the Nassau line-up. Ten go postward. Conspicuous by her absence will be Promising Lead who won Curragh's Pretty Polly in late June. She has been sidelined with a knee injury.

A pool of 750,000 pounds is expected in the Scoop 6 on Saturday. Four races at Goodwood and two races at Newmarket will make up the Scoop 6 sequence. The Stewards' Cup at Goodwood, a 1200-metre event, is the last leg. There are 28 runners in the Stewards' Cup and a sum of 62,000 pounds awaits the winner.

Going into Saturday, John Murtagh has six winners. He won with Sixties Icon on Friday. Richard Hughes has four victories. The amiable Hughes connected with two winners on Friday. They were Prolific at 5-1 and Sohcahtoa at 10-3. Ryan Moore had one win on Friday. He won with Visit, the 2-1 favourite and has four wins going into the final day of Glorious Goodwood. Incidentally, Moore rode Visit to a head win over Cheyenne Star, John Murtagh up.

On Friday at Goodwood, Fifteen Love beat Masaalek one more time. It was the Totesport mile. It was a head verdict. At Royal Ascot, Fifteen Love, a Point Given filly, got the better of Masaalek by one half length in the 28-runner Britannia Stakes over 1,600 metres. Steve Drowne rode on both occasions.

Apprentice jockey D E Mullins rode three winners at Galway in Ireland on Friday. The promising Mullins won with Cristal Island at 7-4, Glitter Baby at 20-1 and Metal Madness at 6-1.

Saratoga in New York hosts the Grade I Test Stakes. Indian Blessing is an odds-on choice. Winner of the Eclipse Award in 2007 as a freshman, Indian Blessing adopted off-pace tactics in the Grade I Prioress in her last outing and outpaced her rivals when it mattered. Six run in the $250,000 event.

Zenyatta, unbeaten in six races, puts her streak on the line in Del Mar's Clement L Hirsch Handicap on Saturday. Mike Smith rides Zenyatta who has won six races by a combined fifteen and three-quarter lengths. Nine run in the 1700-metre race over the polytrack.

Recapturetheglory is favoured in the West Virginia Derby, the $750,000 Grade III race at Mountaineer Park on Saturday. Twelve run. Recapturetheglory won the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne and ran fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Jockey James Graham will be on board.

There is another development in the unfolding steroid story. If a trainer has a positive, he or she will be excluded from the Breeders' Cup races for one year. The announcement was made on Friday.

The Meadowlands (harness racing) in New Jersey has a 15-race program on Saturday. The first race is at 11 30 AM Eastern Time. It will be 9 PM in India. The fifth race is the $407,400 Mistle Shalee, a 1600-metre race for three year-old fillies. The seventh race is the $750,000 Hambletonian Oaks, a trot for sophomore fillies. The eighth race is the $1,500,000 Hambletonian trot for three year-olds. It is the biggest day in harness racing in America.
