Mangalorkar trained Alekona justified the public support while cantering away for a stylish victory in The Governor's Cup (Grade III), the feature event on the concluding day of the Bangalore Summer Season. This was Alekona's third run in as many months, and he was looking outstanding in the paddock. He had won the Maharaja's Cup in his last start, and had been penalized for that victory. Some of his opponents on Friday were better served by the terms of this race, but the racegoers were so impressed by Alekona's last run, that they were reluctant to look beyond this horse while picking a winner in this prestigious event. The bookmakers were generous in offering 16/10 against him, as there was some support for Gruezi, Southern Charge and Southern Empire. Friendly Fire set a strong pace ahead of Angelique, Azureus, Southern Charge and Southern Empire, while Alekona and Gruezi were seen cantering at the rear end of the field. The order remained more or less the same as they began taking the final turn near the 600 metres marker. At this stage, Angelique had skipped away from Azureus while the others in the front pack were beginning to send distress signals. Southern Empire and Southern Charge were the first ones to fade from the scene. Mallesh Narredu produced Alekona on the wide outside and released his grip on him. This game galloper responded beautifully and bounded away from the rest. It ceased to be a race thereafter, as Alekona stretched out nicely to emerge a worthy winner of this race. Gruezi came with a long stretch run to take the second spot ahead of Azureus and a tiring Angelique. The Governor of Karnataka was at the races to present the trophy to the proud owners. It was a day of "Doubles" at the races this afternoon. After Alekona, both Mangalorkar and Mallesh went on to win another race in the day's card. Badda Rupaiyya was the market fancy, and this ward from Mangalorkar's yard was ridden to an exciting victory by Gnaneshwar. This favourite was a bit lethargic at the start, and was unfortunate to find a wall of horses in front as the dozen runners straightened for home. Early leader Master Strategist shot his bolt and was passed by Good Companion and Shisham inside the last furlong of the race. Gnaneshwar was rewarded for his patience as a huge gap opened up through the middle, and his horse began to respond to his urgings. Badda Rupaiyya was improving with each stride, and got up in the last twenty metres to go past Good Companion and emerge a popular winner of this race. Shisham was a tame third while the rest of the runners were totally outclassed. Mallesh's mount Act Smart was backed with confidence in the concluding event of the season. Allowing Darktan and Smart N Special to make the early running, Mallesh brought Act Smart with a fluent gallop and tried to steal the race near the home turn. Movie Queen came with a menacing run on the inside and the two of them were involved in a brief tussle, before Act Smart got stronger and skipped away from her. An Equal Music came from the back to finish a close third. The last named was looking very well in the parade ring, and should be noted for an early success in Mysore. The combination of trainer Prasanna Kumar and jockey Harish were the other duo to combine effectively, as they landed a nice priced double for their owners. In a sprint race for maiden three year olds, Zaffarani and Forever Mark were the obvious market leaders. A late surge of money on Spark Of Class took everybody by surprise. Harish pushed Spark Of Class to the front and rode him out till the very end. This well prepared horse lasted out to contain a late surge from Edmondo and Zaffarani, who incidentally dead-heated for the second place. Their other winner was Spark of Gold. This horse had the necessary credentials, but was ignored by the punters because the horse had been "gelded' only three weeks ago. There was huge support for Atlantus, who was backed to the exclusion of the other runners. Christopher had trouble in settling Atlantus in the early stages, before occupying the second spot behind the speedy Nearco Master. Atlantus surged into the lead near the distance post and was being hailed a winner, when suddenly Spark of Gold made a move from the rear. Under the strong and relentless guidance of Harish, Spark Of Gold got up on the last couple of strides to down the colours of Atlantus. One came with a late surge to beat Nearco Master into fourth place. Another exciting finish was witnessed in a sprint race for horses in Class III. The speedy In The Zone and Asiaticus were set to fight a close finish, when Vinod Shinde produced public choice Cannavaro on the wide outside. The three jockeys rode for all they were worth, before irfan Ghatala's Cannavaro got his neck in front and beat In The Zone into second place. The latter has been off-colour this season and today's performance augurs well for his connections. He can definitely improve on this run. Asiaticus was a close third while Tina's Triumph made up a lot of ground to finish an impressive fourth. The day started with a win for Prakash ridden Desert Realm. This ward from Ganapathy's stable headed the field as they turned for home. Well fancied Sabari took the turn very wide and lost all her chances at that stage. Baffled came with a late surge and started to gain ground on the front runner. Under Prakash's relentless driving, Desert Realm was able to hold on to her slender advantage as they hit the wire. Sabari was a tame third. Another public choice to win close home was Amit Caddy's Bid For Glory. Early leader Ahira was refusing to give up, as Appu urged Bid For Glory and asked her to accelerate. Vivek ridden Redshift was also making up good ground on the outside. The three horses were locked together as they flashed past the winning post. To the relief of her numerous supporters, Bid For Glory was declared the winner. At the end of the day's programme, Mr. Jayant Shah, Chairman of the Bangalore Turf Club gave away momento's to the outstanding performers of the Bangalore Summer Season. Dr Vijay Mallya's racing outfit United Racing and Bloodstock Breeders Ltd was declared the "Leading Individual Owner", having won stakes of Rs 1.35 crores. S Ganapathy was declared the "Champion Trainer" with 32 winners. Suraj Narredu was declared the "Champion Jockey" with 28 winners. Pesi Shroff trained Set Alight was declared "The Champion Horse" of the season, having won stakes of Rs 1.04 crores. Pesi Shroff's Kiara and Padmanabhan's Western Command were declared joint winners of the title "Horse Of The Season". They had won thrice and placed second once, in their four respective starts this season.
