Fond Fantasy swamps the opposition

By Sharan Kumar | 29 Nov 2003 | BANGALORE

Fond Fantasy (B Prakash up) winner of The Bangalore 1000 Guineas (Grade II) being led by trainer Ganapathy

Ganapathy trained Fond Fantasy showed remarkable improvement when swamping the opposition in the Gr 2 Bangalore 1000 Guineas, the first classic of the winter season on Saturday. The daughter of Razeen turned out at the paddock parade in pink of condition and justified her looks with a striking turn of foot inside the final two furlongs, to leave her nearest rivals Allies Serenade and Ramjet to battle for minor slots. Fond Fantasy’s form appeared to have taken a dip at Mysore when she ran below par but she has bounced back in spectacular fashion, after being given a break from the hectic schedule. Fond Fantasy will stay back in Bangalore and will be in the line up for the 2000 Guineas, scheduled for the second week of December and the in the form that she is in, she looks invincible.

Allies Serenade, who won the Mysore Derby, was expected to have a decisive say as the daughter of Allied Forces had made tremendous progress during the monsoon season but her career graph has never run on expected lines. She did manage to neck out Ramjet for the runner-up spot but she was a beaten horse once Fond Fantasy took off in the straight.

Frenchman Ronen Thomas had Ramjet dictating the pace from the word `go’, with Fond Fantasy settling in the third or fourth position along with Allies Serenade. Breno took charge at the half way stage and led the field into the straight. Thomas tried to push Ramjet in the gap along the rails but jockey McCullah on Breno closed that gap as the saddle had apparently shifted and he was looking for the safety of the rails. Ramjet was squeezed out for a while even as Fond Fantasy burst clear and Allies Serenade surged ahead. While Fond Fantasy went away for an effortless win, Allies Serenade and Ramjet battled hard for the second spot but the former held on to the narrow lead.

The Kudremukh Cup, a race for horses rated 30 to 45, had a very competitive look about it and the dry-coated Clear Cut put in a spirited run in the final furlong to edge past the front-running favourite One Aim. While One Aim showed appreciable improvement, Clear Cut went into the race in tremendous condition, backed by a win at Mysore when still a trifle underdone. Star Wind went into the race perhaps without sufficient ground work and the long lay from the track also came in the way of the filly having a big say in the proceedings. She was beaten for speed at the top of the straight but was full of running at the finish. Star Wind should make amends next time out.

Dominic trained Believer lived up to the expectations when winning quite capably from Torodoro and Star of Windsor. Believer had excelled in a mock race and in his subsequent workouts but Star of Windsor who was a fancied runner in the Mysore Derby, enjoyed more support in the ring. The son of Steinbeck, sporting pacifier blinkers, did not have the speed to overhaul Believer who took charge as soon as the field straightened out for the homestretch run. Torodoro too joined issue but Believer was home with a fair degree of comfort, with Star of Windsor beaten to the third spot. There was lot of hype about Star of Windsor being a classic prospect but on the evidence of this run, there is not much hope. Torodoro should be in the limelight very soon. The controversial Taurian lost all his chances at the gate itself.

Solar Rocket towered over the opposition in the Own Opinion Plate (Div III) and the betting on him too was spirited despite the fact that he did not have significant racing form to go by. The market expectations were justified as Solar Rocket had the race in her command from the start and won pulling up, sparing more than 10 lengths at the finish. Gunmaster held on finish second of Diamond Tops. Padmanabhan’s Iron Butterfly proved speedy for the opposition when winning in the hands of apprentice Ashwin Rao. Regal Effect was second ahead of Arathorn and Flying Fortune. Arathorn went on to Flying Fortune inside the final 100 metres, causing Prakash to check his mount and it probably cost him the third spot. The objection by Prakash against B Paswan of Arathorn was upheld. Amber Prince was backed down to on money favouritism in the division one of the race but the son of Dark Nile was hard-pressed to win from a late-finishing Zabdiel.

The horses of three trainers dominated the Bhadravati Plate, which looked a minefield for punters. Grace And Faith and Conquering Grey were well supported and the former shaped like a winner but stablemate Zhanna spoiled the party with a dash to the post in the hands of apprentice Mahendran. A mere short head separated the first two placed horses.

Royal Prose got due reward for consistency when the four-year old managed to stave off the challenge of the front-running Baira close home. Acquire finished on from the rear to be a noteworthy third. Many took Dilmaanagemore’s last run with a pinch of salt and they were justified in doing so as the son of Procida won as he pleased from Golden Gem and Trajan. Galaxie Dust, who had finished ahead of Dilmaangemore last time out, was never in the reckoning as the latter was seen in true colours.
