Bay of Angels bounces back

Michael Eshwer’s Bay of Angels bounced back after a setback in training had kept her off from the track more than nine months, with a smashing performance in the 2000 metres Royal Calcutta Turf Club Cup that featured Friday’s races. Winner of the Gr 1 Stayers Cup at Hyderabad in February, Bay of Angels had been nursed back into top fitness by the hard-working trainer. After tracking Royal Force into the final 350 metres, Bay of Angels smoothly cruised past the front-runner to win as she pleased providing jockey Ronen Thomas an armchair ride. The rest of the field was simply outclassed.
The only question mark about Bay of Angels prospect was her level of fitness and the extent of recovery from a tendon problem. She looked fine at the paddock, her legs stood firm and the race ceased to be a contest once Thomas asked for an effort from the daughter of Placerville in the homestretch. There was support for Bernstein, Royal Force and Golden Fortune but they were no match to the favourite. Royal Force did well to retain the runner up berth. Now that Bay of Angels appears to have made a smooth comeback, more races in store for her if she stays sound.
Baracudda, who was knocking on the doors of success, finally obliged his supporters with a sustained effort in the final furlong to edge out the front-running favourite Radical Velocity. Radical Velocity has been something of a let down but since the filly was running in modest company, she was fancied to win but she faltered again. This time it was not her lack of initial speed, which was her undoing. Radical Velocity was taken on a start to finish mission but she failed to accomplish the mission, running out of reserves in the shadow of the post. Newmachar plodded home to be third. sorts.
Jockey Warren Singh finally had reason to smile when he booted home a double through Dare You Say and Dust On The Bottle after going through a harrowing time. Dare You Say who has been pretty consistent this season, obliged in the Belgaum Plate as things fell in place. Dare You Say runs best when he is allowed to run freely in front and this time out, there was none to hassle him in front. Dare You Say led from the word `go’ and quickened when favourite Star Chivalry strongly challenged him inside the final 100 metres and held on grimly. Ankole was third. Dust On The Bottle beat a mediocre lot to win the races meant for the lowest category. Unfancied Enduring Freedom dictated the pace right from the word `go’ and shaped to cause a big upset but Dust On The Bottle shot through the middle in the nick of time to edge out the front-runner. Buddy had all the chances but he failed to quicken when it mattered the most.
The day also had reward for trainer Arjun Mangalorkar who seems to have hit a bad patch. Love Me Do held on resolutely to stave off the challenge of Figaro to land the spoils. The trainer would surely have heaved a sigh of relief as this win would have restored his confidence levels. There was sustained support from More Music but the tune went wrong midway through the straight when the daughter of Twist And Turn filly dropped to the rear of the field apparently after being knocked around and returned with a rupture of the tendon.
That indeed was the plight of those who put faith in the famed gold and brown brigade as all the fancied runners played truant. No Excuses who was running after a longish gap, was backed to the exclusion of her rivals as the price on Millennium Magic drifted out in the ring. No Excuses tracked Demanding right from the word `go’ even as Millennium Magic dropped to the rear of the field after being prominent early on and managed to nose out the front-runner in virtually the last stride. Amazing Ability was third ahead of Millennium Magic who was putting in good work after the cause had been lost.
Ponnappa trained Dasanandini edged out Dr Evil to win the race meant for juveniles at fancy odds. Dasanandini led from the word `go’ and despite coming intense pressure from Dr Evil, managed to pull out the reserves to win by a shade less than a length. Favourite Way To Fame found foot rather too late to be of any use. Passing Glance, who was given a light ride, is the one for the notebook.
