French Raider Natagora Takes Thrilling 1000 Guineas
By Tom Krish | 05 May 2008 |
Natagora made all the running to win the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday.
The 11-4 favourite, trained in France by Pascal Bary and ridden by Christophe Lemaire, stuck her neck out gamely when strongly pressed inside the final furlong.
James Fanshawe's Spacious threw down a very serious challenge on the run to the line but Natagora found extra to repel the 11-2 chance, while Jim Bolger's Saoirse Abu rattled home for third.
Lemaire wasted no time in sending his mount to the front and set an honest pace at the head of affairs as Muthabara kept close tabs on the leader.
Natagora quickened things appreciably at around the quarter-mile point as Infallible emerged from the pack with a strong-looking charge under Jimmy Fortune.
That Cheveley Park Stud-owned filly was closely pursued by Spacious, wearing connections' first colours, as Nahoodh also began to come home with a wet sail.
Unfortunately, the latter had nowhere to go in behind Natagora as she found her route blocked, but the winner proved ultra-game in front and found more when it was required inside the final 200 yards.
Spacious would not give in but could only get within a half-length at the line, with Saoirse Abu claiming a close-up third.
Pascal Bary suffered heartbreak in the 2003 edition of the race when Six Perfections found all sorts of trouble and covered most of the Rowley Mile before flashing home just too late to collar Russian Rhythm.
But this time Natagora was never headed and an elated Bary said: "She has done something fantastic. They all came to her, but she ran to the end.”
Recalling SixPerfections' loss, he added: "This is different. Six Perfections was very unlucky, but she went on to win Jacques Le Marois and the Breeders' Cup Mile so we forgot a bit about that.
“Today was another race. Of course things can go wrong but she is a different kind of filly. Six Perfections had to wait behind, but this filly can go all the way."
Bary's hopes could not have been in safer hands than those of Lemaire, 29, whose record at Newmarket now stretches to an extraordinary five Group 1 triumphs.
These include back-to-back successes in the Champion Stakes, but winning a British Classic was special.
