The K N Guruswamy Memorial Cup, a nine furlong race for horses in the highest class, was the feature event in Saturday's race card at Bangalore. The small field of seven runners included the winners of the Bangalore 1000 and 2000 Guineas respectively. Southern Charge had won the colts edition in winter, and had immediately left for Mumbai to have a tilt at the Indian Classics. He seemed to have lost his zest for racing and after a couple of poor runs at that centre, returned back to Bangalore. In the meanwhile, Wonder Smile had gone on to win the Bangalore Oaks. She had made her seasonal appearance in the first weekend of the current season and had missed out by a nose to Welcome Back. Based on their current form, the filly was considered to be better than the colt and was heavily supported to reach the starting gates at a miserly 60/100 while Southern Charge could be easily backed at 7/2. In what was considered to be a match race between the two. The rest of the runners were ignored in the betting ring. The front running Friendly Fire set a moderate pace to lead from Angelique, Wonder Smile and Southern Charge while the other three were seen following at a respectable distance. Suraj seized the initiative as the field straightened and took Angelique to the front. The lead was very short lived as Prakash produced Wonder Smile on the outside and collared the front runner. Wayne Smith tried his best to goad Southern Charge into a striking position, but his mount refused to quicken and was seen plodding on the wide outside. To the delight of her supporters, Wonder Smile seized the initiative and led into the last furlong. There was a sudden roar in the stands as Angelique produced a second run and started to gain ground on the favourite. This filly, owned by Dr Vijay Mallya, proved that she may have lacked early speed but she had abundant stamina. Angelique finally collared Wonder Smile on the last stride and emerged victorious by a short head. Dhariwal was extremely proud to lead in this winner. Suraj completed a grand treble with this victory. Suraj Narredu had earlier ridden two winners for the Byramji's. He rode a tactical race on the top weighted Andronicus, as he made use of the inside draw and took him to the front. He slowed down the pace and the others were content to follow him. Winning Rays and Surprise Package were his nearest challengers. Andronicus quickened nicely in the straight and opened up a healthy lead before Enforcer emerged from the pack and went in chase of the leader. Suraj kept Andronicus going for a popular victory. Surprise Package retained the third spot. His third victory was astride the heavily supported Able Associate. This nice looking chestnut colt was backed down from 2/1 in the morning to half money at race time. It seemed as though he was going to be taking on a bunch of non triers in this race. Suraj settled Able Associate in mid division as Super Sha and Clouseau made the early running, and ,gave him his head in the last two furlongs. The response was immediate, as he was seen lengthening his strides and going away for an emphatic victory. Able Associate is a nice type and should make his presence felt in open company. Apprentice Vinod Shinde blotted his copybook by giving a very peculiar ride to the heavily supported Milagro in a seven furlong race for horses in class III. This Irfan Ghatala trained four years old was a gallant second amongst a bunch of well performed youngsters on the opening day. In today’s race, he was pitted against horses of his own age group, and most of his opponents were appearing for the first time in the current season. While Fighting Star and Milford set the early pace to Sun Zone and Superior Surprise, Vinod Shinde made no effort to improve his position on Milagro, and the pair were seen gracing the rear end of the field. To compound matters, he pulled the horse to the extreme wide outside of a well spread out field as the twelve runners took the final bend. It goes to the credit of the horse that inspite of all of Shinde's antics, Milagro covered a lot of ground and finished within two lengths of the winner. It was Appu who seized the opportunity and came with a flourish on the Dominic trained Superior Surprise to beat Fighting Star at the post. Sun Zone was a short head ahead of Milagro. The day’s proceedings started with a couple of victories for the Ganapathy camp. Power To Fight with Prakash in the saddle was installed as the public choice to win the opening race of the day. He was lucky to win this race as the front running Red River Rebel drifted out under pressure and lost precious ground while doing so. Prakash seized this godsent opportunity and pushed his horse towards the inner rails to finally win by a neck. The next race saw the appearance of the Mumbai based Gleaming Sky from Karthik Ganapathy's yard. This well built chestnut filly was looking a picture of fitness and confirmed her superiority in emphatic fashion. Srinath allowed her to canter along in fourth place as Valiant Bid and Orientation made the early running. Srinath released the breaks near the 400 metre marker and Gleaming Sky was seen going away from the rest. Strategic Partner came from way behind to pip Thuinder's Roar for second place. Orientation burst a blood vessel and should be left alone for a while. With this victory, jockey Srinath completed riding ten horses this season. His tally at the end of this race made fascinating reading. He has won on eight of his ten rides and finished second on one occasion. It is a wonderful strike rate and considering the fact that most of his horses are well fancied, he needs to be complimented for doing a great job. In the only other ride that he had in the afternoon, Srinath was able to finish second on Pleasuring. With the victories of outsiders El Gordo, Angelique and Superior Surprise, the jackpot pool hunters were seen running for cover with only ten of them surviving and going into the last race of the day. Wayne Smith ridden Script.Ure Destiny was fancied to win this race and had been the favourite for most of the day. There was strong support for the Arjun trained In The Zone as the horses reached the starting gates. Punters were very sceptical about the chances of Wayne Smith riding a winner, and therefore ignored the chances of Script Ure Destiny. They realized their folly, only when they saw the filly making a start-to-finish effort and easily winning this sprint event ahead of Aelenia and the fast finishing Flaming Lamborgini. The ten surviving jackpot pool investors also realized their mistake at the end of the day. Not one of them had nominated this mount of Wayne Smith. The jackpot pool was carried over!
