Fleeting Arrow Confirms Superiority

The Heeroji Lad Bangalore Juvenile Million (Grade III) was the stellar event in Saturday's race card at Bangalore. It was the richest race for three-year olds during the season. This seven-furlong race attracted the best talent stationed at this centre with 14 horses accepting to face the starter. Fleeting Arrow and Rimpuche had won two races each while many of the others had cleared the maiden ranks. The terms of the race stipulated that there shall be no winning penalties and as such all of them would carry level weights barring the fillies, who would get the statutory sex allowance. Fleeting Arrow was the only one amongst them to have won both his starts over a similar trip, while Archipenko was considered as his nearest challenger. The two of them were supported equally and went to the post as the joint favourites. Since both the fancied runners were drawn on the extreme outside, Jodha pushed Rare And Precious to the front and decided to try and win this race from end-to-end. Archipenko quickly took the second spot while Fargeat tucked Fleeting Arrow into a close third with the rest of the field following at regular intervals. Rare and Precious tried to open up the gap while taking the final turn, but Suraj Narredu on Archipenko was alert to it and came alongside and got the better of him. At the same time, Fleeting Arrow under the strong driving of his rider was produced on the wide outside. In a pulse-pounding finish, Fleeting Arrow was able to nail Archipenko in the last twenty metres of the race and lift the beautiful trophy. Rare and Precious was able to retain the third spot while Rimpuche was a bad fourth. Fleeting Arrow confirmed that he is the best three year old at this centre at the moment, and the top class timing clocked by the first two was a tribute to their respective trainers. For trainer Babu Rao who has just started his training career, it was a proud moment considering that he had recently travelled with this horse to Mumbai and back. Jockey Samuel Fargeat is riding with great aplomb this season and this was another wonderful display of balanced riding. Much was expected from Suraj Narredu on this last day of the season, since he had come within two points of Prakash. He had rides in seven of the nine races and most of them were public choices. The fact that he was unable to win a single race during the afternoon, reflected on the state of the punters at the end of the day's proceedings. Friday’s racing had been unkind to them, and Saturday was more or less the same. With only two joint favourites, Fleeting Arrow and Dancing Highness winning in a long card of nine events, race goers wanted to forget the last weekend of winter season as a bad dream. At the end of the day, trainer Ganapathy and jockey B Prakash were able to retain their professional crowns and walked away with the respective trophies. Ganapathy had 32 wins while Prakash rode 27 winners. Dancing Highness won the Leading Stud Trophy for horses in the highest class. Appu got into a bit of trouble at the start but did not panic. He allowed her to relax and saved ground by sticking to the rear end of the field. The early leaders Aurelian and Logan's Run were passed by Lionheart in the last furlong. It was at this very moment that Dancing Highness was produced in the centre of the track, and displayed an amazing turn of foot to beat Lionheart at the post. Highly fancied Logan's run was unfortunate to have scraped the rails near the 700-metre marker and came back bleeding. Youreasweetheart finished a good third ahead of a tiring Aurelian. This victory completed a double for trainer Padmanabhan, who had earlier won the opening race of the day with a first timer called Moneyinthebank. Highly rated and well bred Sheza Star was the odds-on choice to win this race and made all the running, but was shocked to get caught at the post by Moneyinthebank and You're Wonderful. The last named was the most impressive of the lot as he covered a lot of ground from the rear to finally loose in a blanket finish. The upper division of the maidens race was won by Arjun Mangalorkar's Cart Wheel who outsprinted a bunch of well-performed horses. Mallesh took this filly to the front while Caprioska and Gentle Knight were seen being urged to keep in touch with her. It became a no-contest after a while as Cart Wheel lengthened her strides and drew away from Gentle Knight. Caprioska was a dismal failure and was seen plodding at the end. This victory of Cart Wheel was small compensation for the Arjun camp as they had two big failures with Appertain and Ace Act during the afternoon. Both horses ran listlessly and finished many lengths behind the respective winners. Appertain ran an ordinary third to Born Beauty while Ace Act ran a faraway fourth to Milford. Milford gave jockey Appu his double for the day. Another professional to score twice was trainer B Puttanna. His horses won the two divisions of a race for horses in the lowest class. Both his winners, Star News and Starry View, were ridden by apprentices and both were available at fancy odds. The season concluded with Starry View's race and the trophies were given away by the chairman of the club to the deserving victors.
