Aurelian Canters Away With The Racing Patrons Trophy

The sparingly raced Dhariwal trainee Aurelian registered an easy victory in The Racing Patrons Trophy, the feature event in Saturday's race card at Bangalore. He had made his seasonal reappearance in late February and run an impressive second behind Hesperus on that occasion. He was pitted against a moderate set of seven runners in this sprinting event, most of whom had no current form to support their chances. The only other horse who merited attention was Irfan Ghatala's Steelium who has also been hounded by niggling setbacks in the recent past. This horse had also put in an appearance a couple of months ago and run a fair fourth without being extended. The punters were not ready to look beyond the two above mentioned horses while making their decision to back a winner in this race. Aurelian is a free running type, who loves to go to the front and make all the running. Imran Khan had no problems in opening up a good lead within the first couple of hundred metres of the race. He had no idea about what had transpired behind him. Steelium had jumped out awkwardly and veered towards the outer sand track. In doing so, he had unseated apprentice Vinod Shinde, who was seen standing on the turf while the horse was running rider less. Armament and Sword of Power chased the front runner for a while, before Armament shot his bolt at the bend. The heavily whipped Sword Of Power was able to finish a respectable second while the rest were found totally flatfooted. Aurelian was an effortless winner of this event. It was perhaps one of the poorest set of class I horses to race this season. An Equal Music was a very impressive third in his last outing. This talented horse had been under a cloud for over six months before he ran last month. On that occasion he gave a fright to the backers of on-money favourite Silken Clare, when he had come and taken the lead before tiring out due to lack of racing fitness. In todays race he was tipped as a good thing and won accordingly. Lots of money came on Mangalya Prarambh which made him the race time favourite. The odds against An Equal Music expanded to 5/2. Adorabella made the early running with Mangalya Prarambh in close second, while An Equal Music with Samuel Fargeat in the saddle was content to race in midfield. Even though Mangalya Prarambh took over the running after taking the turn, Fargeat did not panic and brought his horse with a smooth through the middle. It ceased to be a contest thereafter as An Equal Music went away from the rest. Milford ran on from the rear to take the third spot. The opening event saw the on-money Anna's Quest being withdrawn at the starting gate. It is reported that jockey Appu informed the starter that the horse was trotting lame. With this withdrawal, jockey Prakash on Pleasant Prince had no mentionable opposition in this small field .He had his mount on a tight leash and the moment he shook him up, Pleasant Prince overtook the front running Sheer Gold and bounded away from the lot. The fields for maidens are becoming poorer and poorer as the season is coming to an end. Prakash completed his double with National Trust in the fifth race of the afternoon. He must be complimented for this almost perfect ride that he gave to this horse. He totally outwitted Ramesh on Indian Arcelor as the two of them fought it out in the last hundred metres. Jedi Knight was a fair third. Apprentice Vinod Shinde has been the big revelation of this season. This youngster is improving with each ride and is always ready to learn. He also rode a double for Irfan Ghatala during the afternoon. His first victory came astride Manthara, who was a costly failure in her previous start. The trainer had removed the blinkers after that run, and this seems to have worked wonders for her. Although she was the slowest out of the gates, Shinde brushed her up into second place before taking charge at the distance post. She was briefly challenged by the hard ridden Double Elite but that did not seem to bother her. Manthara won easier than the official verdict. They completed a double in the last race of the day, when Shinde took Marianella to the front and kept her going in the straight to win by a widening margin. The favourite Refresh seems to be ungenuine and was seen changing his legs, when pressure was applied on him. Star Royalty was able to edge out Refresh for the runner-up berth. With this double, Vinod Shinde has climbed up further in the jockey's tally for the season. The chart makes for some interesting reading. Prakash -24, Suraj Narredu-20, Appu-19 and Vinod Shinde -17. It is rare to see an apprentice boy giving a fight to the seasoned champions, and that too when he had to ride in the early part of the season without a whip.
