Timely Action Saves The Situation

History was made at the Bangalore Turf Club on Friday, when the result was announced after the finish of the sixth race of the afternoon. It was a finish worth watching as Gara Fluid was challenged by the favourite Place Her Well in the last hundred metres of the race. Both these horses raced head to head and were locked together as they flashed past the winning post. The commentator was unable to separate the two and called it out as "A very close finish". To the delight of the supporter's of the favourite Place Her Well, the Judge announced her as the winner of this race. It seems that after viewing the mirror image of the finish, he had no option but to change the result in favour of Gara Fluid who had clearly pegged back the challenge of Place Her Well. Luckily for all concerned, the white cone had not been hoisted and the judge was well within his rights to announce the correct result. There was a brief agitation by those present at the course but after a lengthy steward’s enquiry and the prominent display of the finish photographs, the matter was settled to the satisfaction of all racegoers. Since it was the first time that such a situation had arisen at this centre, the Judge would be well advised to be absolutely certain before announcing the results. In these modern days of digital technology as well as the time sheets available to the judge, such situations are totally unwarranted. People were left wondering about what may have transpired if the stewards had realised the mistake of the Judge after the white cone had been hoisted? It was a very mediocre card of seven races which was gone through during the afternoon. Echoes Of Light was the favourite to win the mile long Hoysala Trophy for horses in class II. This was the same horse which had been responsible for the suspension of Christopher Alford during the Mysore season. On that occasion it had lost to a stablemate in class III. With today's victory, Echoes Of Light goes to class I where he is expected to make further progress over staying trips. In today's race it was Logans Run who made the running ahead of the favourite, while Strong Minded and Chilly Wind were in close attendance. Allonia had lost a lot of ground at the start. Suraj Narredu had the pleasure of seeing his horse overtake the front runner in a workman-like fashion, and Echoes Of light was seen toying with the opposition thereafter. Allonia came from the rear of the field to nose out Strong Minded for third place. Suraj had earlier piloted War Child to a popular start to finish victory. It was only the second career start of this highly fancied runner, and with this victory he has confirmed that he is going to win many more races for his owner. It is reported that Suraj Narredu had a broken stirrup during the running of this race. Freemason was seen finishing fast after a lethargic start and was able to get the better of Hard Cash near the winning post. The rest of the field was totally outclassed. The supporting event was the Satyavaty V Char Memorial Cup over 2200 metres. The betting for this race was confined to Van De Star and Assert The Right. With Saptashwa going to the front and setting a hot pace, the favourites were seen struggling to keep pace with him. Assert the Right was the first one to pack up, while Van De Star put up a symbolic fight near the distance post before shortening his strides. Saptashwa has struck good form this season and has done well for his trainer. Van De Star has proved that although he is a good horse, he can not tackle trips beyond a mile. It will be worth following him when he is raced over seven and eight furlongs. Assert The Right should be left alone as he seems to have gone sour. The day started with the lower division of a maidens race over 1400 metres. A well bred filly called Grand Madame (Razeen-Averoff) was the rage in the betting ring. She was slightly fractious at the gates and fell down while being loaded. She dislodged jockey Prakash in the process. However, she was so much superior to the field that all these happenings had no effect on her as she got stronger in the straight and sailed away from her opposition. Let The River Run came from last position and got the second spot ahead of Leon Cavallo. The beaten brigade should be racing in class B in the summer season. The upper division of this race saw the fashionably bred Star Of Washington (Placerville-Stunning) make his maiden appearance on a race track. He is a nice looking gelding and settled beautifully in the race. No-hopers Pokeman Master and Marcegalia made the early running before Enduring Star was taken to the front and skipped away from the field. Srinath took out the stick and roused Star Of Washington to raise a gallop and the result was instantaneous. He went past the leader and won in a timing which was almost a couple of seconds faster than the lower division. His progress shall be watched with keen interest by the racing patrons. There was a lot of hype around the running of Celestial Son in the last race of the day. He was the first choice of all track reporters as it was said that he had put in the best track work of the season in his morning exercise. Although a lot of money was wagered on the Mallesh Narredu got-abroad Aristos, the supporters of Celestial Son did not allow the bookmakers to increase the odds against their choice. Their confidence was not misplaced as Celestial Son was seen galloping well within himself, and treating the opposition with a certain amount of disdain. Aristos, who finished second is a nice looking colt and was in need of this run. He shall definitely win if his connections choose to race him again during the rest of this season. The Last Samurai was a faraway third.
