Macchupicchu, Moonlight Romance Reign Supreme

By Mahendra Mallya | 21 Mar 2010 | MUMBAI

Mr. Prem Tharani & Trainer C D Katrak leading Moonlight Romance (Imran Chisty Up), winner of The Forbes Breeders` Juvenile Fillies Championship (Gr.3)

The popular theory that a juvenile usually finds it difficult to give weight and beat his own-age rivals proved creditable as both Beautiful Stranger and Xisca carrying five kilos more than their rivals, succumbed meekly without raising even a semblance of a fight. Both ran much below par and both ended third in their respective assignments.

Macchupicchu (Emerald Cat – Anaroma) from trainer Pesi Shroff’s yard raised his level and showed commendable improvement on his PBMM fourth to avenge his defeat at the hands of Beautiful Stranger to win the Shapoorji Pallonji Breeders’ Juvenile Colts Championship (Gr 3). Macchupicchu is owned by the most successful partners of this season – Bergis Desai, Vijay Shirke and KN Dhunjibhoy, the owners of the Queen filly Jacqueline. Incidentally, Jacqueline was given an emotional ovation and a touching farewell as she was paraded in the paddock for the patrons to have on last look at her as she is now retired to stud.

“Jacqueline will now go to Nanoli Stud Farm and we are considering sending her to Glory Of Dancer. We had initially also pondered over sending her overseas for breeding, but the logistics and the formalities would be enormous. The travel too would be a tough ask for Jacqueline and she is too precious for us. So we decided that the best thing in Jacqueline’s interest would be to have her here with us. She has done us proud and pulled off the improbable for us. She has brought us all a lot of Joy and we were unanimous in concluding that Jacqueline stays close to us,” said Mr Khusroo Dhunjibhoy.

Mr Vijay Shirke said, “I thank the Chairman of RWITC Mr Vivek Jain for inviting us to parade Jacqueline in the paddock for the racing public to witness her and applaud her tremendous achievement of winning all the four Indian Classics run so far. This is a good gesture from the Club and we appreciate it. Jacqueline has created a world record and she deserved a fitting farewell.”

Coming back to Macchupicchu, the colt, ridden by B Prakash, sailed into the lead early in the straight, without encountering any resistance from the leader Hall of Glory. Once in the lead, Macchupicchu advanced with good acceleration. Moon Star started to mount a challenge but as he got a bit closer, Moon Star drifted out under pressure and just couldn’t catch up with the elusive Macchupicchu who surged clear to win by a comfortable two-and-quarter length. Beautiful Stranger was under pressure even as they turned for home and just could not produce the PBMM power run and ended a tame third, well clear of Hall of Glory.

While Shroff cornered glory here, his filly Xisca disappointed in the fillies’. Sitting last of six, Xisca failed to quicken in the straight and finished a faraway third. Moonlight Romance (China Visit – Wandering Star) who was just one ahead of Xisca until the turn, improved rapidly as they straightened up. Moonlight Romance then shifted gears and was at top speed in no time to sail past the hapless front running pair of Ocean Storm and Amouresque. She was totally in command in the final furlong. Moonlight Romance produced a devastating turn of foot to post an impressive seven-and-half length victory without toiling too hard.

Mrs Beroze Mistry and Mr Shapoor Mistry gave away the trophies to the winning owners and professionals after the Fillies and Colts Championship races respectively. A bumper prize of a three night stay at the Chiva Som Luxury Spa in Thailand and a beautiful Rosantal Vaz were given away to the winners from the members’ enclosure in a contest of skill requiring contestants to nominate the winners of the Fillies’ and Colts’ Championship races.
