A field of 11 fillies took the start in the Deccan Bookmakers Fillies Trial Stakes (Gr.III), at Hyderabad on Sunday. The local challenger, Vijay Damini, shot into the front and led the field till the top of the straight. As the runners showed up on the home stretch, Vijay Damini was closely followed by Scionic, Constantino, Couleur Rouge, One Life to Love and the others. Scionic responded gamely to John’s riding and sped past Vijay Damini inside the final furlong. The favourite Couleur Rouge could not collar Vijay Damini and finished third.

The daughter of Diffident – Battle Star gave its young trainer Altamash. A. Ahmed his first classic success. The overjoyed Altamash, who trains primarily in Western India, exclaimed, “Words cannot explain my happiness. I feel really good to have come this far, with just three 3 year-olds in my stable.”

The supporting event of the day, the Original Vel Mrs. Radha Balasubramani Gold Cup, was a handicapper’s delight, with the first seven places covered in just about two lengths. The speedy Dancing Touch led the pack of 16 till the distance post and gave up. Red River Rebel took charge thereafter and started to shape as a winner when Raj Veer and Aphrodisiac covered ground rapidly in the last 50 metres. Although Raj Veer was hanging out in the final stages, he managed to put his head in front at the wire to win the race while Aphrodisiac finished second, a neck in front of Red River Rebel.

Laxman Singh’s Caligatae sprang a surprise in the higher division of the A. Krishnaswamy Memorial Cup. Leading all the way from the start, Caligatae kicked on gamely to stay clear by two lengths at the finish. Rosemead was in chase throughout but could not hold on when Pythogaras and Paymaster rushed up towards the finish. Pythogaras finished second while a dead head was declared between Paymaster and Rosemead for the third place. Girl of Love took the fifth position in a close finish. Aloisia, who had whipped around at the start dislodging the rider in her previous run at Bangalore did something similar again. Sent into the race as the firm favourite, Aloisia jumped out last and seemed to be reluctant to raise a gallop. Jockey Sampson managed to stay on the horse but could not improve his mount.

The lower division went in favour of another friendless horse, Metaforce, trained by R.H. Sequeira and ridden by younger brother N.M. Sequeira. Setting out in front from start, Metaforce had a useful lead of about five lengths, 200 metres from home and that helped him to shake off Tell me a Tale by the shortest of margin at the finish. Rising Rays and Mizzna filled the frame while Pathfinder just could not get his stride right and finished fifth. Reality Show was withdrawn after she started to give trouble at the gates.

The first four races of the day were bagged by well-supported favourites. The opening race, the Raja Saheb of Itkyal Memorial Cup was won by Deshmukh- trained Fleet Commander. Chasing the early leader Alybro till midway up the straight, jockey P.S. Chouhan raced away with Fleet Commander to give the property of Col. S.B. Nair his second successive victory. The strong handling of Chouhan enabled Faisal Hassan-trained Samsonite to score his second straight win as well, in the Blue Max Cup. Alexander Square improved in the last 50 metres to take the second spot ahead of Flashy Conquest.

Jabel Queen improved from behind, took a striking position nearing the final bend and surged clear to score a runaway win in the higher division of the Diablo Plate. It was a close finish for the minor placing with Aficionado Crown Castle and Retaliate finishing in that order. An objection by the rider of Retaliate against the rider of Crown Castle for bumping and boring in the last 100 metres was upheld and their positions were reversed.

Dream Deal relished the wet feel of the turf and raced away with the lower division. Around the final furlong, five horses, Heart N Soul, Bharatanatyam, Zarina, April Showers and Dream Deal got into a line but the last named surged clear. Zarina, April Showers and Devil’s Advocate finished in that order, behind the winner.

The well-fancied Forest Flame shot ahead on top of the straight to win the Scenic Royale Plate, the last race of the day. Man On Fire took time to get into rhythm and by the time he did the race was in the safe keeping of Forest Flame.

Trainer Laxman Singh and Jockey P.S. Chouhan were the only professionals to score a brace each.
