Trainer Arjun Mangalorkar and Dr. Syed Ainuddin Arif leading Immense (A Ashhad Asbar Up), winner of The Deccan Bookmakers Colts Trial Stakes

Arjun Mangalorkar added one more to his classic tally, with the victory of Immense in the Deccan Bookmakers Colts Trial Stakes, at Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon. Producing a good acceleration, Immense shot ahead of Da Xia and Napoleon on top of the straight, to register a convincing win in the big race. S. John, who was to ride the Mangalorkar trainee, missed his flight and the job was entrusted to young Ashhad Asbar. Asbar settled Immense behind Da Xia, Napoleon and Deep Blue Sky till the final bend and as the field appeared on the straight, Immense shot ahead and was sighted a winner with a furlong left in the race. Rapture of Victory and Kohinoor Wish finished second and third respectively.

Dr. Syed Ainuddin Arif and Arjun Mangalorkar who led Immense to the winner’s enclosure, looked delighted with their ward’s performance. When asked what next, Arjun replied, ”Mysore, for the 2000 Guineas.”

El Paso got his wings back with jockey Imran Khan giving a perfect ride in the Totaram’s Cup, for horses in category I, run over 1,800 metres. Orochi set the pace early in the race with El Paso chasing his shadow. Approaching the 800 metres, Imran made a quick move and took El Paso to the front and entered the home stretch with a four-length lead over his nearest rival Grand Rapids. Ave Maria warmed up late, starting to move in the final furlong but El Paso had by then established a clear advantage.

J. Silvester-trained Chamatkar made every post a winning one in the Raja R.J.K. Ranga Rao Memorial Cup. Passing the distance post, Chamatkar had a lead of over two and a half lengths with Al Jadeed in chase. Al Jadeed came up with a sustained run in the last 50 metres, inching closer with every stride but the winning post came to the rescue of Chamatkar, who held on by a head.

Only two favourites obliged on Sunday and both were in the Star Heaven Cup. M. Sathyanarayana-trained English Indian set out in front, right from the word ‘go’, in the higher division of the six-furlong sprint and managed to thwart the spirited effort of Hardccore in the last 100 metres. Mystic Impact and Winning Rays filled the frame. Set Me Free had earlier justified the favouritism in the lower division with a runaway victory. Entering the straight with a two-length lead, Set Me Free increased the margin to six at the finish. Al Jameel, Grey Shot and Thunder King made the board in that order.

P.S. Chouhan started the day with a stunning four-length win on Vijay Trishul over the raging hot favourite Corvette. Shehzad Abbas’s trainee Corvette who had a delayed start to her career but won impressively on debut, was widely expected to canter home in the Classic Style Cup and was sent into the race as money-back favourite. Corvette failed to match strides with Vijay Trishul and ended up a tame second.

Esperanza ran away with the Akkanna Plate, run over 1,200 metres. The odds quoted on Esperanza drifted out, as all the betting centred on the first timer Elzaam. Esperanza had finished an impressive second to Vijay Trishul in her previous after a forward run. Setting out in front once again Esperanza found no challenge and scored an easy win. Splendid Knock and Elzaam took the second and third spot respectively.

Apprentice Ajit Kumar brought the Ananth Vatsalya-trained Vintage Dancer with a flourish from almost an impossible position to deny Green Gift a win, in the higher division of the Goa Plate.

A ten-to-one shot Currency Chest lifted the lower division to give his rider Aadesh Kumar a double. With a five-length lead as the field passed the 800 metres, Aadesh gave a breather near the final bend and stretched out on the straight. Star of Hyderabad raised a late gallop to finish second.

M. Sathyanarayana and D. Netto were among the trainers to score a double while jockeys Aadesh Kumar and P.S. Chouhan got their share of two each.
