Trainer Faisal Hassan and Mr. Kudithi Mahender Reddy leading Splendid Act (R.Rupesh up), winner of The Major Mir Mujtaba Hussain Memorial Cup

Faisal Hassan-trained Splendid Act (Case Law-Chocolate Chip) got into galloping mood to upset the apple cart of Walnut Creek, in the Major Mir Mujtaba Hussain Memorial Cup, the main attraction on Monday at Hyderabad. Walnut Creek, with two easy wins to his credit and heading for a hat trick, was tipped as the best betting proposition of the day by all and sundry.

Going into the race, Red Fairy, Splendid Act, Fabulous Crown and Walnut Creek were huddled in a bunch till the six-horse field rounded the final bend. As they straightened up, Splendid Act showed plenty of speed and shot ahead to take charge. Walnut Creek started to close the gap but Splendid Act kicked on gamely under jockey Rupesh riding.

Vijay Monarch (Diffident-Post Impressionist), a probable Derby contender from Vittal Deshmukh’s stable literarily toyed with the mediocre opposition in the Nine Carat Plate, run over 2,000 metres. Chouhan settled Vijay Monarch in second last position, in a field of seven, for the first 800 metres and then made a quick move to get to second and once on the straight lengthened his stride. Manduro, Southern Rose and Scamper filled the board for the records.

The Hyderabad Veterinary College Diamond Jubilee Cup was divided into two races. Netto-trained Democracy (Inner City-Royal Rex) was ridden to victory by S. John in the higher division. Jumping out smartly, Democracy led all the way in the seven-furlong distance and won by a lengthening margin. Accordion and Spectacular Falcon chased Democracy meekly all the way.

Celtic Shot (Inner City-Troienne) got a taste of P.S. Chouhan’s hard ride, to win the lower division. Approaching the last 300 metres, seven of the eight horses were almost in a line, spreading out across the track. Chouhan brought the well-fancied Celtic Shot from behind with some hard riding and shot ahead, to win by half a length from Smarty Prince, who started to close the gap towards the finish. Golden Tricks moved well along the rails to finish a close third.

S. John started the day with a start-to-finish runaway victory in the opening race, the Deccan Prince plate. Rocking Rocket lost the second place to Craven Cottage in the final stride.

Suraj Narredu piloted Prasad Raju’s Commanding Heights (Hymn-Bumper To Bumper) to a facile victory in the Cuddapah Plate. Firstandforemost, Flash of Emerald and Commanding Heights raced closely till the top of the straight wherefrom the last named shot ahead widest of all. Flash of Emerald was not able to match stride and failed to justify the popular support. Guiding Light finished on third.

Laxman Singh-trainee Imaan (Valid Concept-Integrity) won the higher division of the Astana Plate, while Anupam Sharma’s Krithiman (Alnasr Alwasheek-Starboard) took the lower division. Tracking Ace High closely till the straight, Imaan stretched out well to stay ahead of Cicilia and win. Jockey Chouhan had replaced Suraj Narredu on Cicilia. Chemeli travelled around the field on the straight to improve and finish third. Apprentice Ajit Kumar completed riding ten winners when he rode out Krithiman to a start-to-finish victory. Victory Signal warmed up late to take the second spot.

Trainer Netto and Jockey S. John teamed up to score a double while P.S. Chouhan improved his count with two more wins.
