Trainer S Padmanabhan leading Becket (Y S Srinath up), winner of The President of India Gold Cup Grade I

Becket (Hawk Wing- Boiling River) won the prestigious President of India Gold Cup (Gr.I) in splendid fashion on Sunday at Hyderabad. Trainer S. Padmanabhan, who has over 100 group races to his credit, deserves all the praises for keeping Becket in pink of condition. Having had plenty of problems as a two year-old, Becket has fought his way out and brought laurels to his proud owners. Paddu always believed that Becket had the potential to be a money spinner and the result has once again proved that he is one of the best in this business.

Becket set a new course record on the monsoon track at Hyderabad, bettering the earlier record of Arabian Knight by 0.04 seconds. Becket now finds his name alongside legends like Everynsy, Squanderer, Commanche, Fire Haven, Almanac, Chaitanya Chakram, Royal Tern, Elusive Pimpernel, Mystical, Set Alight and a host of others who have won this coveted race in their career.

As the field of five were dispatched for the 41st running of the President of India Gold Cup, jockey Srinath made sure that Becket took a lethargic start and settled him in the rear while stablemate Polish Patriot set the pace followed by Leave it to Me, Arabian Prince and Fleet Indian. As the five got ready for the final onslaught, entering the straight, Becket manoeuvred his way through the front-runners and in a trifle had left the others well behind. Polish Patriot ran a mighty race to keep the others at bay and stay on in second.

Faisal Hassan’s Sprucespringstien (Placerville-Sprucing Up) galloped with gigantic strides in the last 100 metres to beat the favourite Crocodile Hunter in the Soli And Gool Poonawalla Memorial Gold Cup. Crocodile Hunter had a clear lead of over three lengths midway up the straight but started to feel the pressure in the last 150 metres and the rider, P.S. Chouhan had to go for his stick. Jockey S. John on Sprucespringstien forced his way in between Aphrodisiac and Rajveer, to literarily fly towards the finish and clinch the race.

Flash Flares (Glory Of Dancer-Georgia’s Gal) earned a win in a scintillating finish in the Golconda Trophy, run over seven furlongs. Yippee, Fleet Commander and Armador were involved in a keen tussle as they approached the last 100 metres but Moheena closed the gap from behind and surged ahead. She was shaping like a winner when Flash Flares galloped with telling strides to deny Moheena a win on the last stride. Fleet Commander was a length behind in third position ahead of Youre an Aeton who was finishing on.

Imran Khan rode a back-to-back double on two public fancies, Don Valentino and My Tyson. Don Valentino (Don Micheletto - Lansbury) set a new course record over the nine-furlong distance in the Alluri Seetharama Rao Trophy. Royal Embassy, Don Valentino and Power Colors entered the home stretch in a line and after a brief encounter Don Valentino picked up speed to leave the other two cold and stretched out well. Power Colors took the second spot ahead of Royal Embassy.

My Tyson (Mischeviuos Music – Lek) got the better of Mystical Knight by a head at the wire in the lower division of the Rani Rudramma Devi Cup. Mystical Knight had a length and a half lead over Cheetah He Jeetha as they entered the straight and Imran, who had My Tyson along the rails, pulled him out expecting the gap to close and when shown the daylight, My Tyson started to gallop resolutely to win in a sensation finish.

Faisal Hassan’s Tristar won the lower division from Young Soldier in one of the closest finishes of the season.

R. Rupesh had Laxman Singh’s hot favourite, Royal Shaan, in control from the start and won the opening race by a lengthening margin. Aadya Aadya Aadya chased the winner throughout without hope.
