Trainer L V R Deshmukh and Mr. Kondlapudi Satish leading Fly By Wire (P S Chouhan Up), winner of The Asaf Jah VII Memorial Cup

Vittal Deshmukh-trained Fly By Wire (Black Cash – Fashion), who has hit a purple patch, completed a hat trick when he won the Asaf Jah VII Memorial Cup, the main event on Monday at Hyderabad. On a rain-soaked afternoon, jockey Chouhan timed his run on Fly By Wire to a nicety and sped past Kings Cruise on the straight, to register an authoritative win over his seven rivals in the highest category. Carte Blanche warmed up late to take the runner-up berth ahead of Kings Cruise.

It rained for almost an hour after a sudden cloudburst during the second race of the afternoon. The 9 mm of rainfall turned the track wet but that did not affect the races as it is run on the monsoon track. Even the result did not go haywire as all the winners of the day were in the money. Jockey P.S. Chouhan was simply at his best booting home five winners in a card of eight, three for Deshmukh and two for Faisal Hassan. Three of the five were grand stand finishes where his riding skills were tested to the hilt.

Chouhan opened his account with Deshmukh-trained Dixie Bell (Mudeer – Chelsea) in the Dynamic Dancer Cup, the first race of the day. Setting out in front from start to finish, Dixie Bell was strongly challenged by Jabel Queen in the final furlong. As the two started to fight every stride, Imran Khan on Jabel Queen was using his stick freely on his mount and that probably was his undoing as the ‘Queen’ is rather averse to getting whacked. Dixie Bell held on by a ‘head’.

Vijaysiddanth (Razeen – Divinity) was a length behind front-runners See You There and Scubarioo, as the field entered the straight in The Raja Mehboob Karan Memorial Cup. Passing the distance post, Vijaysiddanth picked up speed and drew clear to win from the favourite Dash of Class who improved from behind. Scubarioo and See You There filled the frame. Gallant Prince was withdrawn on veterinary grounds before the start.

Siblings, Easy Touch and India Gate won their respective races, giving trainer a well-earned double. Easy Touch (Warrshan – Game Girl) shot ahead entering the final furlong and held on from the late finishing Amontillado in the higher division of the Karimnagar Plate. Hardccore warmed up late to finish third. India Gate had to be hard ridden by P.S. Chouhan to pip the relentless Green Mist close to the winning post in the lower division of the Mount Everest Plate. Trainer Faisal, who is having a very lucrative season, reached double figures with four wins coming from two days of racing this week.

With two horses Retaliate and Deccan Pearl finishing wide apart in the Royal Tern Plate, judging the winner was a difficult task even after viewing the slow motion replays. Retaliate took charge from Aficionado on entering the straight and was shaping like a winner. Deccan Pearl (Juniper – Carnelly) travelled in the rear till the home stretch and started to veer out alarmingly when the rider Aadesh Kumar began to ride out. What looked like a hopeless effort inside the last 100 metres suddenly changed when Deccan Pearl picked up some forward motion towards the closing stages to get the race by a whisker. The other fancied runner, Juliet was lost in the crowd.

Metaforce (Eljohar – Poem) slipped in along the inner rails to score in the higher division of the Mount Everest Plate. Menlo Park came in late to beat the long time leader Chamatkar for the runner-up berth.

Laxmikanth, the rider of Mystic Impact (Inner City – Lovedale Lady) sensibly avoided the inner portion of the track which had taken a beating after the rains and that paid dividends as he won the lower division of the Karimnagar Plate with ease from Dancing Harbour. Classic Dancer was withdrawn after she dropped the rider and bolted.
