Trainer J S Dhariwal leading Aristos (Rayan Marshall Up), winner of The A.P.Chief Minister's Cup

Jaggy Dhariwal schooled Aristos (Okawango-Leros) produced a scintillating gallop to win the A.P. Chief Minister’s Cup at Hyderabad on Sunday. The property of Dr. and Mrs. Vijay Mallya, representing the United Racing & Blood Stock Breeders Ltd., raced away in the hands of Ryan Marshall to set the track ablaze, setting a new course record over the metric mile. The earlier record time of 1 min 38.88 secs stood in the name of Dancing Dynamite, which was set on the Invitation day last October, and that has been bettered by Aristos by 0.28 secs.

Iaepetus set the early pace and led the field till the last 300 metres from where Aristos took charge and galloped resolutely keeping a straight course to rather stun the two main contenders in the race, Sprint Star and Aboline. Sprint Star finished a tame third while Aboline veered out under pressure, and took the runner-up berth. Whether the last minute travel from Mysore or the 60 kilos weight on his back was Sprint Star’s undoing will be put to test again on Friday this week, at Mysore, in the Maharaja’s Cup.

Kohinoor Mystic (Young Senor – Undoubted) considered being a speedy type was at his best when he broke the minute barrier in the Malvado Plate, a five-furlong sprint for horses in the highest category. Trainer Ananta Vatsalya aka ‘Vasu’ who has tuned this four year-old to perfection, showed plenty of speed, setting out in front in a scorching pace and racing away to a four-length victory with Splendid Act turning out to be the best of the rest, finishing second. This four year-old gelding had set a record timing on this course a month ago and he bettered that effort, to finish under a minute (59.38 secs) in the race.

The combination of Vatsalya and jockey R. Umesh were the only professionals to score a double. They had earlier in the day succeeded on Zambo Anga, in the higher division of the Epsom Plate. Umesh had to just guide Zambo Anga through the field and show him the daylights and the son of Eljohar picked up momentum in a trifle and stretched out to win from Manduro. Pathfinder and Modest Bride filled the frame. The lower division was won by Strategic Command (Flitch – Tololing) who stretched out effortlessly by a distance. Kansas City Mac managed to peg back the long-time leader Cheetah Hi Jeetha for the second spot.

Chemeli and Dartos The Muscle broke away from the rest on entering the straight and fought out every inch to the finish in the Nizam Sagar Cup. While Chemeli enjoyed a slight edge throughout the fight, it was Dartos The Muscle (Dark Nile – Success Story) who managed to just put his nose in front at the all-important end to snatch a short-head win.

K. Satheesh’s Ice Candy (Young Senor – None So Noble) tracked The Parliament till the last 400 metres and then took charge under the handling of apprentice P. Venkat to win the Forest King Cup. Cannon Vision covered plenty of ground in the final 100 metres to finish a close second. Pacific Groove with a rally along the inner rails edged out The Parliament for the third place.

Although Sorbitrate ran a bit green on the straight he had managed to keep the heavily backed Rocking Rocket at bay and was looking to pull it off when Cascading Glory (Storm Trooper – Wild Glory) unleashed a terrific run in the last 100 metres, to cover almost 12 lengths and win the opening race, the Madanna Plate.

Pluto Queen, another short-priced favourite failed in the very next race, The Swamy Ramananda Thirtha Plate, losing out to Surya Putra (Case Law – Tropic Of Fear) who had improved from the second position till the final bend to take command on the straight. Pluto Queen received a bad jolt from Surya Putra immediately after jumping out and could finish only second.
