Rains and Games Play Havoc with Delhi Races

By Parjanya | 24 Sep 2010 | DELHI

With the cancellation of yet another meeting that was scheduled to be held on September 29, the racing season of Delhi 2010-11 has yet to take off. Five months have already passed since the conclusion of the last racing calendar.

Frustration of not having races on time could easily be read on the faces of the professionals and owners. Horses have been exercising for more than two months but the hot and humid weather during July and the first half of August compelled the authorities to postpone the commencement of the season to the second part of August. But the plans were washed away by torrential rain, which continues to play havoc till today.

Finally, Delhi Race Club hoped to have races on 31st August, and even announced entries and handicaps for the same. That made the local racing fraternity happy. But all efforts went in vain with another heavy spell just before the acceptance stage. So, in a way, most reasons of putting off the races were beyond one's control.

After the deluge, comes Common Wealth Games, which are scheduled to take place in Delhi from 3rd to 14th October. The Delhi Race Club is situated on Mustafa Kemal Attaturk Road which has two busiest lanes either way. On each side, one lane is reserved for Common Wealth Games traffic leading to the Khanna Stadium where Lawn Tennis competition will be held. Before and after the Delhi races, a traffic jam on the road is a regular feature and that led the Traffic Control Department of Delhi put a ban on the races during the CW Games.

Of course, the DRC authorities haven’t give up hope completely. They are still making efforts to get some relaxation from the Traffic Control Department by promising that they would request the racegoers not to come to the race course in private vehicles. In this regard, bookmakers had already made the representation to the club. In the meanwhile, of course, the club has decided not to conduct intervenue and races till further orders.
