The Deccan Chronicle Gold Cup was the main event of the small card of six races that were run on Sunday, at Hyderabad. Shehzad Abbas-trained Sparks (Don Micheletto – Lansbury) was ridden in copy book fashion by P.S. Chouhan to beat his six rivals. As the gates opened, Sparks jumped out slowly losing about three lengths but that was not a worry, as it gave an opportunity to the rider to settle him off the pace, over the 2,400 metres trip. Orochi called the shots followed by Adamant Approach, El Paso, La Lapitus, Davenport, Reconnect and Sparks and the order remained till the last 800 metres. On the straight, Orochi lost steam and La Lapitus was quick to surge ahead but that was short-lived as Sparks came with an incredible run to score impressively. Carrying the top weight of 61.5 kilos, El Paso finished second, while the stablemates, Davenport and La Lapitus filled the frame.

Pradeep Chouhan has mastered the Hyderabad track to such an extent that he is all-out to break earlier records on this course. With a treble on the day his tally has now risen to 35. The Army Cup turned out to be an all-Army affair. Young Soldier, owned by Col. S.B. Nair, won the race. P.S.Chouhan’s ride on Young Soldier (Hymn – Spirit Of Patxi) is for the note book of young jockeys at this centre. Chasing Metaforce throughout, Chouhan gave a hard ride to put Young Soldier in front, within the final furlong. Walnut Creek looked to be in distress throughout the straight and failed for the second successive time as a favourite, finishing second. Tell Me A Tale finished a close third with a late run.

The third win for Chouhan came in the concluding race, the Roman Beauty Plate, where he rode Faisal Hassan’s Aspire (Dancing Beggar – Rambagh) to out-beat the favourite Commanding Heights in all aspects. Commanding Heights, who was backed down as an ‘odds-on favourite’, could not match stride when Aspire joined him on the straight and the feeble handling by the jockey added to his woes.

Trainer Laxman Singh and apprentice Harinder Singh teamed up to pull off a lucrative double in the first two races. Imaan (Valid Concept – Integrity) justified the favouritism in the Red Orchid Plate to make it two in a row this season. Golden Sabot chased the winner on the straight while Pacific Groove was struggling to put up a challenge and finished third.

Firstandforemost (Kly Green – Purejoy) made it a pillar-to-post victory in the second race, the Red Surprise Cup, to beat the favourite Lambourn comprehensively.

M. Sathyanarayana’s Heydan (Hammerstein – Undefeated) shot through horses on the straight to win the Glory of Dancer Plate. Meticulous was withdrawn after he refused to move into the gates and the field was reduced to eleven. Lying in about fourth position behind Yippee, Democracy and Alybro while entering the straight, Heydan found a wide gap in the centre and wasted no time in going for it. Ruffiano put in a strong challenge towards the last 100 metres but Aadesh Kumar had Heydan in control and pegged back Ruffiano’s effort.
