Trainer K S V Prasad Raju leading Ave Maria (A Imran Khan Up), winner of The Makalu Plate

Prasad Raju trained Ave Maria, who had a great winter registering a hat-trick, was finding it difficult to get to the winner’s enclosure this season. Finally on Tuesday she found her winning ways. The property of Miss.Ameeta Mehra lifted the Makalu Plate, a handicap for horses in the highest category with a resounding final burst of speed. Bold Blast was withdrawn before the start and that reduced the field to nine runners. Mission Chief made use of the 5-Kg allowance and led the field right from the start, extending it to almost eight lengths as the field approached the straight. Inside the final furlong, Fly By Wire made a valiant bid while Grand Rapids started to push his way through the rails even as Mission Chief continued to kick on in front. It was at this stage that Imran Khan brought Ave Maria (China Visit – Prevalence) around horses on the far side and she responded with a spirited run to win by a clear three parts of a length.

Prasad Raju had earlier won on Striking Gold, in the lower division of the Almanac Cup. Stablemate Star Prospect set out on a start-to-finish mission and had almost succeeded when a brilliant piece of riding by P.S. Chouhan saw the favourite Striking Gold pulling off a ‘neck’ win, much to the relief of her supporters.

P.S. Chouhan continued his dominance with a straight double, emerging clear on Guiding Light, in the higher division. Backed to the exclusion of the other runners, Narayan Rao schooled Guiding Light left the field cold on entering the straight and drew away by nine lengths. Sun Strikes ran on to finish second.

Narayan Rao managed to pull off a double for himself, after lodging a successful objection in the Sweet Memories Plate. Royal Degree and A Fire Work were involved in a keen tussle inside the final furlong when Chemeli found speed and the jockey tried to push through a gap between the rails and Royal Degree. The narrow path in front closed and jockey Rupesh on Chemeli had to check his mount to avoid a collision and finished third. Stablemate Cicilia (Duja – Shy Romance) came from out of the blue to finish second, a ‘neck’ behind Royal Degree. Jockey Rupesh lodged an objection against apprentice Harinder Singh, who rode Royal Degree, for closing the gap in the final furlong that cost him the race, was upheld by the stewards and Cicilia was declared the winner, relegating Royal Degree to the third position. Both Cicilia and Chemeli are trained by Narayan Rao.

Jockey Aashhad Asbar was another professional who had a brace of winners. After a fierce fight with Lone Ranger, Asbar pulled off a well-earned win for Kohinoor King, in the lower division of the A.P. Heritage Cup. Trainer M. Chouhan, who got his trainer’s license early this season, opened his account with this win. An objection by P.S. Chouhan, rider of Lone Ranger, against the winner for interference was overruled.

The double for Aashhad Asbar came in the Red Rufus Plate, the concluding race of the day. Jumping out well, Asbar had Faisal Hassan’s Sweety Boy in box seat and made every post a winning one. Kohinoor Fairytale finished second while Golden Tricks impressed the most, finishing third, coming from way behind.

L. D’Silva’s Menlo Park was hard ridden by Ch.K. Chary to lift the higher division of the A.P. Heritage Cup. Al Jadeed finished second while Disco Flash and Pythagoras filled the frame.

Devil’s Advocate probably was in the know that she was the public choice in the opening race and she picked up momentum inside the final furlong to score over the late finishing Sugar Deal.

On a day when five firm favourites obliged, Retaliate was a prominent loser in the higher division of the Paradis Plate. M. Sathyanarayana-trained Craven Cottage led right from the start, over the seven-furlong distance, to win from Dance Baby Dance and Retaliate. Ananth Vatsalya, who trains Retaliate, is reported to have given a written complaint to the stipes that his jockey, R. Umesh had not ridden as per instructions and giving misleading report about a saddle slip. An enquiry has been opened into the running and riding of Retaliate.
