The railbirds, regulars as well as the derby day enthusiasts, were given the feel of a roller coaster ride on Sunday at Hyderabad. The day started with well-backed ‘on-money’ favourites obliging in the first two races. It was a smooth take-off for the punters but then they started to get dizzy once the favoured horses began to drop dead and longshots started to rule. “I come here once a year for the Derby, enjoyed all the action but was just not able to pick one winner,” remarked a visitor at the end of the day. The jackpot pool went unsolved and an amount of over Rs 19 lakh got carried forward.

Daniel Grant rode Shehzad Abbas-schooled Aphrodisiac (Royal Gladiator – Persian Conquest) to a gutsy win in the Major General Nawab Khusru Jung Bahadur Memorial Cup. This race for horses in category I had attracted a field of 14 runners. The speedy Kohinoor Mystic shot ahead from the start and led for the first five furlongs. Daniel brought Aphrodisiac through horses and, with splendid acceleration, swept past the front-runners to win. Chestnut Charmer came on with a powerful run in the closing stages but fell short by a length.

Daniel’s pattern of riding earlier, on the two well-backed horses, The Leader and Corvette, were in contrast, where he preferred to run away with them on the straight but found the pressures of the long home stretch at Hyderabad going against him. The Leader raced in the rear for the first 500 metres of the mile trip and then improved gradually to take charge as the field entered the straight. In the final 150 metres The Leader started to shorten his stride and Jabel Queen (Epicentre – Desert Storm devoured ground to surge ahead.

Corvette found one better in Askioz, in the higher division of the Turf Authorities Cup. Showing urgency, Corvette, went ahead approaching the final bend but could not keep up the momentum, falling to Askioz (Hymn – Skipperess) in the last 100 metres. Kohinoor Ruby (China Visit – Great Performance) took charge passing the distance post and held on from the fast-finishing Star of Hyderabad in the lower division, to give a win for the young trainer, M. Chouhan on the big day.

Vijay Damini (Elusive City – Kabubina) just about managed to scrape through in the S.N. Reddy Memorial Cup, the opening race of the day. A keen tussle ensued between Vijay Damini and Golden Queen on the straight and at one stage Golden Queen had gone past the favourite but started to veer out awkwardly in the last 50 metres which turned out to be her undoing.

Arya Veer (Placerville – Imperial Satsuma) drew clear in the Nawab Sultan Ali Khan Memorial Cup while Al Sarraah managed to hold on to the runner-up berth ahead of Onti Onti Onti.

Kohinoor Eye, who held forte till the last 50 metres, failed to hold on and finished fourth in the P.V.G. Raju Memorial Cup. Allegation (Libor – Spreadeagle Star) won the race from the fast-finishing Anguna and Canadian Girl.

Shehzad Abbas’s Aloisia (Gaswar – Titanium) made it a start-to-finish affair in the Jatprole Cup, the concluding event of the day.

Anupam Sharma and Shehzad Abbas amongst the trainers and Dashrath Singh amongst the jockeys were the professionals to score a double each.
