Trainer K. V. Srinivas, deputising for J. S. Dhariwal, leading Captivating (Ryan Marshal Up), winner of The Melbourne Racing Club Trophy

After an eye-catching second to Kyles Of Bute in The A.P. Governor’s Cup, Captivating was installed as the raging favourite, amongst the four contenders in The Melbourne Racing Club Trophy, run over seven furlongs on Sunday at Hyderabad. Setting out on a start to finish mission, Captivating (Burden Of Proof – Cesandri) toyed with the small field and won running away from Cruising.

The Police Cup, for horses in category I, turned out to be a keen contest between three runners, Bella Coola, Tristar and Grand Rapids. The seven horses in the race ran in a cluster, with just about three lengths separating the entire field. Bella Coola shot ahead midway up the straight and Chouhan on Tristar was using all his riding skills to get on even keel. Grand Rapids (Ontario – Bridgeofsighs) was hemmed up with horses around him and as jockey Ch.K. Chary showed him the daylight, forcing his way out, the four year-old gelding literarily flew, in the dying moments of the race, to emerge victorious in a three-way finish.

Trainer Laxman Singh and apprentice Harinder Singh combined to pull out a lucrative double. Caligatae cut the wind from the start and stepped up momentum on the straight to establish a useful lead. Onera Onera Onera was in futile chase all through the home-stretch. The duo had started the day with another start-to-finish win, on Elzaam (Tirol – Shark games). Divine Ganges finished a faraway second while the favourite Xtreme never found foot, finishing third.

The lesser fancied Sweet Heart from Deshmukh’s yard upset the applecart of stable mate Vijaysiddanth. Sweet Heart (Razeen – Resplendent Star) set her own pace over the 2,200 metres trip in The Red Satin Plate and approaching the final bend, jockey Aashhad Asbar gave a breather, let the field come to her and when he alerted his mount, she was indeed a ‘Sweet Heart’. Monduro came in late, to beat Vijaysiddanth for the second place.

Travelling easy, Drayton (Epicentre – Crystal Beauty) took charge, with 800 metres left, in the lower division of The Kakinada Plate and was never headed thereafter. A second position was all that Sorbitrate could manage. P.S. Chouhan rode the winner for D. Netto.

Netto scored a double when apprentice Kiran Naidu with a steady ride made every post a winning one, in the higher division, the concluding race of the day. Spirited betting on Sharp Victor landed her as the firm favourite but she had to be contented with the runner-up berth.

S. Habeebullah-trained Indian Storm (Inner City – Career Collection) quickened at the right time to overtake the front-running Cheetah Hi Jeetha and Chamatkar, to win the higher division of the Faridoon S Chenoy Memorial Cup. Rising Rays, See You There and Smarty Prince finished behind the winner in that order.

A keen tussle ensued in The Bhagat Singh Plate, between the top-weighted Alexander Square and Hard Kingdom with the latter having his way in the dying moments of the race. Alexander Square held the forward position throughout, while Hard Kingdom (Diffident – Roman Eagle) after dropping back made his move approaching the last 300 metres, covering ground rapidly.
