Mr. Vijay Kumar Gupta & trainer L V R Deshmukh leading Super Duper (P A Culhane Up), winner of The A P Race Horse Owners Association Juvenile Million

The A.P. Race Horse Owners Association Juvenile Million was the spotlight of Monday’s races, at Hyderabad. The race, offering a total stake amount of over 1.5 million rupees, for two-year-old maiden horses, was run over a distance of 1,100 metres. Ten youngsters, comprising of six fillies, left the parade ring to vie for top honours. Its My Crown dropped the rider on the way to the gates and headed straight to his stables. He was subsequently withdrawn and that brought the field down to nine.

Jockey P.S. Chouhan, who is the retained rider for Deshmukh’s stable, had the option to make his choice and he picked to ride Spanish Conquest. The other runner from the yard, Super Duper (Keltos-Supercal), was entrusted to P.A. Culhane. Spanish Conquest went into the race as the firm favourite while Aventina was the second in demand. As the race started, Zero Tolerance cut a fast pace with Super Duper positioning behind, within a length. As the heads turned for home, Super Duper emerged out of the pack and showed a clean pair of heels. The manner in which Super Duper changed gears to leave the field cold in the Million, ensures a promising career ahead for him. Bloody Mary and Florentine finding Super Duper too hot to handle, started to fight out for the runner-up berth, while Aventina made up grounds late and the three finished almost together in the same order.

Trainer Laxman Singh had a double for the second successive day. Golden Queen (Ikhtyar-Killarney) won The Prince Pradeep Cup with an effortless run while Oscar Royal (Forest Gazelle-One Tough Lady) punched home in the higher division of The Crack Regiment Plate. Golden Queen ranged alongside the front-running Winning Strides and Chiquelle, and approaching the final turn stretched out effortlessly with P.S. Chouhan astride. Dream Deal, Suchiman and Indian Storm filled the frame. Oscar Royal pulled off a terrific victory in the very next race, storming home from behind, to get the better of Narwhal, close to the winning post. Culhane rode a confident race on the winner. Gold Splendor was withdrawn after being fractious at the gates.

Deshmukh and P.S. Chouhan had started the day with a start to finish win on Victory Sky (Mr Mellon-Strike It Right), in The Zurbaran Plate. The ‘on-money’ favourite stretched out easily to record a six-length victory. Star of Hyderabad was in futile chase throughout.

Chouhan rode K.V. Srinivas trained Golden Flame (Reach The Gold-Salamanca) to victory in the lower division of The Haridwar Plate, the concluding race of the day. With this win, Chouhan ended the day with three wins and took the season’s tally to 26. Prohibition warmed up late in the race to finish half a length second.

Netto-trained Yippee (Hymn-Belle Danseuse) tracked the early leader Cheetah He Jeetha till the top of the straight and surged ahead to score in the hands of apprentice Kiran Naidu, in the higher division of The Haridwar Plate. Copertina was lethargic at the start, missing a few crucial lengths and started to catch up in the final 100 metres but fell short by three parts of a length.

Prasad Raju’s Indian Epic (Epicentre-Cosmic Swirl) was given a neat ride by Irishman P.B. Beggy, to win the higher division of The Satavahana Cup. Intrepid Warrior had to settle for the second place, while Petradura’s efforts along the inner rails earned her a third place. Eloquence was withdrawn before the start. Anupam Sharma’s Kathakali (Case Law-Zehera) chased the leader Noor Ulain till midway up the straight and surged ahead to take the lower division. Jockey A. Ashhad Asbar had replaced R. Lakshmikanth on the winner. Sorbitrate lost many lengths at the start but improved to finish third behind Star Experience.

T. Srinagesh-trained Classic Ruby (Hammerstein-Ruby Tuesday) was the biggest upset of the day, claiming the lower division of The Crack Regiment Plate. Classic Ruby, who was loitering at the wrong end till the top of the straight, came up with a spirited gallop around the field to beat them all.
