Bharath-Trevor dazzle with Star Symphohy

Trainer Bharath Singh leading Star Symphony (Trevor Patel Up), winner of The Midnight Cowboy Handicap

The mid-week races were dominated by veteran trainer Bharath Singh and his young knight of the pigskin Trevor Patel. The duo combined fruitfully once again to notch up a lucrative treble with Born To Race, Torch Of Life and Star Symphony. The colours of Mr Deepak Khaitan also bagged a double as Vijay Singh led in Araceli (under the care of Darius Byramji) and Noble Defender.

Trevor’s opening winner, Born To Race (Emerald Cat-Secret Charm) was an absolute cakewalk. The filly was first out of the gates and never looked back. Both Raffles and Aqualina were outpaced in the straight by the hot favourite.

His second winner Torch Of Life (Sharp Attack-Secret Wish) was available at 7/1. The property of Messrs Gautam Sengupta and Chiranjit Basu jumped out well and sat on the outside of the much fancied Kuan Yin. In the straight, Kuan Kin drifted out and took Torch of Life with her but Trevor remained unnerved as he steadied course for the kill. Azorian was a notable third while the ante-post favourite Hundred Pipers was once again fractious at the gates and had to be withdrawn after being checked by the vet.

The Midnight Cowboy Handicap saw the ante-post favourite Angelo drifting out in the ring while support came on Javed Khan-trained Two In One. Angelo however managed to wrest the early initiative and led till the turning for home where Star Symphony (Placerville-Symphony Of Fire) smoothly took over the running. The chestnut from the stable of Mr RK Wadhwan was stretching out beautifully while Two In One was struggling to edge out Angelo for the runner-up berth.

Christopher Alford had a quiet day after guiding Araceli (Chineur-Rippling) to victory in the opening event. The Darius Byramji-trained chestnut filly was given a great ride by the champion rider who allowed Starrer and Awesome Indian to battle it out till the distance post before deciding to flex his muscles. Once Araceli was pulled away from the rails and shown daylight, she galloped resolutely to victory.

Jasbir Singh-trained Sartaj was the medium of a large gamble and he did not disappoint. In fact, barring Mehzabeen, none from the field of twelve was willing to take him on. Mehzabeen went on a start-to-finish mission as is her wont but was collared by the favourite close home. The rest chose to be spectators, not that they could have done anything but surrender to these two superior horses.

Under the umbrella of the powerful Vijay Singh stable, apprentice Ajoy Roy’s confidence has increased considerably. He allowed the tearaway front-runner Noble Defender to dictate terms from the word go. Once in the straight, he first tapped the colt on the left flank with his new found whip and once the galloper had straightened himself along the rails, he changed his whip hand.  The game galloper by China Visit out of Allesca gave no anxious moments to his backers.

The 2000 metres race for the Azhar Handicap with only a handful in the fray turned out to be quite a thriller. The public choice Speed Angel took the onus of setting the pace but was niggled by Schwarzenegger from the half-way mark. The Jaiswal runner took over the running in the straight but both Sea Shower and Sea Of Kisses devoured ground in the final furlong to produce a blanket finish. It was Sreekanth’s power-packed punch on Daniel David’s Sea Of Kisses which finally won him the day.
