Sure Future wins in exciting finish

By Sharan Kumar | 03 Jan 2004 | BANGALORE

Sure Future (Ronan Thomas up) winner of the KeLachandra New Millenium Cup being led in by trainer Arjun Manglorkar deputizing to D.Byramji.

Jockey Ronen Thomas’ perseverance enabled favourite Sure Future to get the measure of front-running Cape Martin in virtually the final moments of the race in the Kelachandra New Millennium Cup, a terms race for four-year olds and over which highlighted races held on Saturday. The late-maturing Sure Future responded brilliantly when everything seemed to have been lost to win in sensational finish. Jockey Harish was once again found wanting when judging the pace and had Cape Martin burn up all his energies racing upfront so much so that the son of Cristofori literally walked in the final stages of the race. This is not the firstinstance that Harish has lost a certain race in this manner and he is definitely one of those overrated jockeys in the circuit.

Despite the fact that Sure Future was taking on a classy opposition for the first time, she was installed the firm favourite to land the plum. Cape Martin led the field from the word `go’ and came into the straight a couple of lengths clear of the rest even as Sure Future was none too well placed to make an assault on the front-runner. Harish did not judge the situation well and instead of preserving Cape Martin for the final moments of the races, he took off and expended all the energies of the race when establishing what was thought to be an unassailable lead. Inside the final 100 metres, Cape Martin had a break of over five lengths over Sure Future who was founding foot and cutting down the leeway in a dramatic manner. With Cape Martin running out of reserves, it was no surprise that Sure Future caught up with the front-runner in the shadow of the post. In doing so, Thomas ended up using the whip in excess of the prescribed limited and ended up with a fine of Rs 3,000. Just Brave rallied well from behind to take the third spot ahead of Daring Don who certainly seems to be on the upgrade.

Sardar Singh has a good type of a juvenile under his belt. The son of Burden of Proof, Fantabulous King made a smashing debut, winning the Ashoka Chakra Cup in tremendous fashion. Fantabulous King quickened splendidly when asked for an effort on turning for home and has shown signs of turning out in to a top class horse. Talented Guy finished on late to take the second spot to serve notice of an early success.

Both the divisions of the Splendid Role Plate went the way of well-backed horses. Puttanna trained Simply Amazing who had let down when fancied strongly by the stable over a mile, hammered the opposition in great style albeit over a lesser distance. The son of Don’t Forget Me, Simply Amazing assumed command on turning for home and spared a distance at the finish to favourite Samarinda to provide jockey Krishnan a welcome win after a frustrating wait. The lower division of the race saw coup being brought off on Madhav Mangalorkar’s Port To Port who got up in time to get the better of front-running Chiffon to land a big touch. Jockey Nagesh was astride the winner.

Ronen Thomas had a double for the day when he guided Zaran to a facile win in the R H Charles Memorial Plate. Zaran shot through the gap along the rails and won as he pleased from Royal Prose and Almonar. Poem proved too speedy for the opposition with a start to finish mission in the hands of apprentice Ashwin Rao who has been riding with newfound confidence this season. Ithica managed to snatch the runner up spot from Inscription. Pelf made amends for the last start failure, getting strong close home to win with a fair degree of ease from Different Story.
