Star Wind shows big improvement

By Sharan Kumar | 24 Jan 2004 | BANGALORE

Star Wind (R Thomas up) winner of The Racing Patrons Trophy being led by trainer Eshwer

Considering the hard-fought win recorded by Star Wind at the bottom of the scales in her last essay, the smashing manner in which the Michael Eshwer trainee swamped the opposition in the 1200 metres Racing Patrons Trophy, the feature event of Saturday’s races, was indeed a big improvement. Star Wind ran true to her potential and those who went by her previous run and put faith in Rio Tinto who has lost form, were left to rue their decision as the daughter of Placerville left the field for dead at the top of the straight to win pulling up.

Chitty Bang who is on a weight reducing mission for a possible touch elsewhere later on, hit the front as the starter dispatched the field for the six furlong trip, with Star Wind settled in a handy second position. Rounding the final bend, Star Wind burst clear and won with a great deal of ease from Comedy of Errors and Al Habib. Rio Tinto who graced the wrong end of the field beat just one home.

First season runner Annakita was backed to the exclusion of her rivals in the Madhavanagar Plate but the daughter of Green Forest did not justify the short price on her but nevertheless survived a scare to post a narrow win over Own Elegance who found the six furlong trip rather sharp. Annakita led the field from the word `go’ but came under intense pressure from the second favourite in the final furlong. Though Own Elegance was rapidly gaining ground on the front-runner, the winning post came to the rescue of the favourite. Gem of a Lady filled up the frame.

M P Mahaesh trained Clueless Puzzle ran contrary to the name as far as the punters were concerned. The race goers had got the right cue for the puzzle as they backed the son of Tecorno to the exclusion of the rest in the Kollur Plate. After racing a handy third behind Big Dream and Gunmaster, Clueless Puzzle surged clear of the field inside the final 350 metres to record a facile win. Classic Time finished on to take the second spot ahead of Diamond Cut. Now that Clueless Puzzle has struck form, he can be expected to maintain an upward trend.

Loknath Gowda’s Flying Spur recorded an encore when staving off the challenge of Brave Persian close home. Brave Persian led all the way and at one stage looked like causing a big upset but Flying Spur who took his own time to pick up momentum, got strong in the shadow of the post and ended up a comfortable winner. Royal Prose edged out Inquisitive virtually in the last stride to snatch the third spot. Ecologist, who was expected to figure at the finish, was never in the reckoning.

Contrary to the belief that a six-event card always brings in its wake a number of upsets, Saturday’s card ran kindly to the punters with well backed horses claiming honours. Royal Ribbons who had advertised her readiness to strike, cornered maximum support in the Lalitmahal Plate, a race for the lowest rated horses and duly won from Buddy without coming under pressure. Astigmatic was the only winner of the day to win at nourishing odds from a late finishing Silver Cat while the strong public fancy Streak of Fire proved to be a big flop.
