Explosivo explodes the field

By Sharan Kumar | 20 Feb 2004 | BANGALORE

Explosivo (Harish up) winner of The Nagarahole Cup being led by trainer Eshwer

Michael Eshwer trained Explosivo exploded the field in the Nagarhole Cup which featured Friday’s races. The blinkers seemed to have worked magic on the got-abroad gelding who scorched the field with a powerful run inside the final two furlongs to leave the field for dead. It was indeed a tremendous forward surge by Explosivo who seems to have made amazing strides ever since he ran behind The Music Lover. In the form that he is in, he can repeat. Explosivo simply outclassed the field.

Dare You Say who was a consistent performer this season, enjoyed solid support because he had a great pull in weights vis-à-vis the allowance claimed by his jockey. But then apprentice Vijay Kumar was not up to the task of handling the son of Forest Fair who faded out to be a poor fifth after running prominently till the final bend. Explosivo who was in the fourth or fifth position at the final bend, accelerated tremendously even as stablemate Storm The Fort was weakening after doing the front-running and went clear to win with a great deal of comfort. Storm The Fort, who was once a rousing performer as a juvenile, seems to have lost his sharpness. Almond showed some sparkle by finishing an impressive second ahead of a late-finishing Al Habib. Comedy of Errors could have saved place money with better handling by his jockey.

Solar Rocket who was given an unsatisfactory ride by Shakti Singh in her previous essay, proved too good for the field in the Smt Satyavaty V Char Memorial Cup (Div I). Solar Rocket had the credentials to win in her previous outing but was not helped her cause by the runaway tactics which tired out the filly. A change in tactics, with the filly settled in third or fourth position, gave ample dividends, as the daughter of Sir Bruce showed great acceleration on turning for home to leave the rivals stranded. Demanding had no answer when Solar Rocket pounced on him but managed to retain the runner-up berth ahead of Emilio. The controversial Silken Magic who lost ground at the start was never in the reckoning and she may continue to be unreliable for some more time to come. The lower division of the race had the well-performed Jumping For Joy all set to end her winless sequence as she towered over the opposition. Despite being none too well placed till the final bend, the daughter of Local Talent showed great speed in the home stretch to get the better of unfancied Assessed inside the final furlong. Assessed who has been re-located from Mysore after the four-year old gelding showed his distinct dislike for his home centre, has learnt to settle down well. Now that he has gone into the gates twice without much tantrums and maturing reasonably well, he should strike before long. Lusitania ran on to finish third.

The ``Amavasya’’ day traditionally runs unkindly for punters, with outsiders dominating the show but this time out, it seemed to be an Amavasya for the outsiders as favourites ruled the roost in as many as six of the seven races programmed for the day. The only favourite to lose in the day was Queen’s Jubilee who was done in by Time Is Money who finally broke level from the gates and showed a desire to race to potential.

Al Qamar who had gone down to Amazing Velocity over a sprint was expected to have it easy in the Holenarasipur Plate (Div I), which was over a more suitable trip of seven furlongs. However, the son of Alnasr Alwasheek had to be driven out to contain the challenge of Spectacular Quest who put up a stiff resistance before calling it a day. In the lower division of the race, favourite Elite Zone had no one to stretch him as second favourite Special Chemistry reared up at the paddock and injured herself badly in the process. The well-bred got-abroad filly reared up at the paddock and hurt her head and was bleeding through the ears. At the time of this report, the vets were still battling to save her precious life.

Samarinda had been an expensive failure in both her previous outings but she seemed to appreciate the step up in distance by recording a facile win over an extended trip of a mile. Accordance, who called it the tune till the final furlong, had no answer when Samarinda swooped on him and surrendered meekly. Right Status showed some form when finishing third but nothing much can be read into her run.
