Silva steers Flightingale to victory

By Sharan Kumar | 21 Feb 2004 | BANGALORE

Flightingale (Ms Silva up) winner of The Governor's Trophy (Grade III) being led by trainer Irfan Ghatala & owners Sunil Damini, Arun Shah

Flightingale had impressive credentials to claim the Gr 3 Governor’s Trophy, which featured Saturday’s races. The Irfan Ghatala trainee did not disappoint when winning the event with minimum of fuss in the hands of Silva Storai. The quality of the opposition may not have been top class but the fact remained that Flightingale is one who is sure to make her mark even in tougher company. Perfect Mover, who looked far from the desired level of fitness, was full of running at the finish and the son of Razeen is the one to watch out for in future assignments.

Flightingale received inspired support though she was conceding weight to all her adversaries. Annakita, who was second in demand in the betting ring, was taken on a start to finish mission in typical fashion by Kolkata champion C Alford. The jockey has often been the despair of Bangalore race goers by his questionable riding tactics and he gave no chance whatsoever to Annakita by bolting with the daughter of Green Forest and leading the field by a big margin which was only expected to dwindle to alarming proportions in the homestretch. Flightingale, who tracked Annakita into the straight, surged ahead without much ado and had the race well sewn up long way from home. Perfect Mover who was struggling for pace at the rear of the field, found momentum in the final furlong and covered plenty of ground at the finish. Perfect Mover is sure to show good progress after this run. Annakita weakened to be third.

Ministrel Heights who was re-located from Mumbai after a rather disappointing performance there, proved good for the opposition in the Infants Plate (Div I), a race for first season runners. Ministrel Heights darted to the front and kept on increasing the lead to check in well clear of Winds of Fire. Winds of Fire showed good speed at the start but failed to sustain his effort. In the lower division of the race, Illusive Lady surprised everybody, perhaps including the connections, by accounting for on-money favourite Inkwazi. May be Illusive Lady was destined to win early because if she had failed here, she may have had to wait long for a ``suitable’’ occasion.

There was big support for Loknath’s Cold War who hadn’t done anything worthwhile. Despite running after a long gap, Cold Ward was backed to the exclusion of his rivals because the race goers were not even put off by the sight of jockey Raja Rao guiding the fortunes of such a horse. Cold War was brushed up to be second early on, then hit the front on straightening but faded out to be a poor third as Daddy’s Darling came up with a big run to win in splendid fashion. It was an overdue success for Daddy’s Darling. It’s So Wonderful was another of Loknath’s horses to get good support but he was well beaten after raising hopes. Ankole who had been running consistently, edged out a late-finishing La Bella Vita to land the spoils at nourishing odds. For those who hoped to recoup their losses on Dancer’s Quiz were only in for a rude shock because the favourite was beaten well before the race took a serious turn. Red Sand led the field right through and stretched away from the opposition to pull off a shock win. Agnivarsh was a faraway second.

Overdrive shaped like a winner by the manner in which she cruised into the lead at the top of the straight. But favourite Onetouch Toomuch overhauled her virtually in the last stride. Overdrive badly needed this run. Diamond Rock was another who won in like manner. Apprentice Gipson Moses pushed Ek Ek Ek from the outside draw to the front and by the time he did so, almost half the distance of the race had been covered. Ek Ek Ek battled on resolutely before Rajesh drove out fancied Diamond Rock to pip the front-runner in the shadow of the winning post.
