Iflookscouldkill brings off an upset

By Sharan Kumar | 27 Feb 2004 | BANGALORE

Iflookscouldkill (Jagadeesh up) winner of The Hemavathi Cup being led by owners Mr. Percy Jai Bhagwagar, Mr. Nandial R. Punjabi & trainer Mr. R R Byramji

Rashid Byramji trained Iflookscouldkill who was once a rousing performer but later on sidelined by niggling problems, sprang a surprise in the 1400 metres Hemavathi Cup which featured Friday’s races. The son of Don’t Forget Me was a giant-killer in his hey days and he lived up to his reputation when staving the challenge of Blue Hare and Ampersand.

Taipan and Siberean who had run forward races in their previous outings had the credentials to be considered as more probable ones to land the spoils but it was left to the ```injured’’ warriors to show that they have not lost zest for racing notwithstanding the setbacks they have had by way of injuries. Iflookscouldkill had seized the initiative when Blue Hare found foot and this in the end, made the difference to the outcome. Both these horses had won graded races in their prime. Ampersand came from behind with a flourish to finish third ahead of Taipan who had all the chances, did not quicken well enough to have a say at the finish. The son of Serious Spender, Siberean dropped back to finish last after running ahead of the pack till the final bend and this indeed was an intriguing performance.

Yet another son of Serious Spender, Capannelle let down the race goers badly. Smashing winner of his previous outing, Capannelle was strongly fancied to have another bold show but jockey Harish rode a strange race on him. The favourite finished last much to the dismay of the supporters of the favourite. Just Amazing who has been in great form this season, recorded a hat trick, getting the better of the front-running Taurian who appeared to have stolen a march over the rest. Jockey Badel drove out Just Amazing to get the measure of the front-runner on the post. Tashann who was in the front bunch, ran on to finish third ahead of Fiorenzza who is yet to regain the form that saw her finish an impressive second behind Fond Fantasy in last year’s Gr 1 Fillies Trial Stakes. Jockey Harish was suspended till the end of the season for unsatisfactory riding.

Way to Fame virtually had no opposition in the Talakaveri Plate (Div I). The most seasoned of the 10 runners in the fray, Way To Fame took charge inside the final 350 metres and stretched away from Proud Tradition who was his nearest challenger. Freaky Chakra was seen finishing on well when the race was in the safe keeping of the winner. The lower division of the race saw Theodora and Itsmyday enjoying public confidence but it was the experienced Black Berry who put paid to the hopes of the market fancies. While Theodora was never in the hunt, Itsmyday strongly challenged Black Berry in the home stretch but fell short by a narrow margin.

Bollinger enjoyed the extra bit of ground that he was asked to cover in the 1800 metres Magod Falls Plate, winning as he liked from Red Falme and Purple Shadow. Nothing much can be read into this victory as Bollinger was taking on a dispirited opposition. Appu’s driving finish enabled Simple And Sweet to contain the challenge of The Soothsayer. The Soothsayer continues to disappoint.

Ponte Romano had everything going for him in the 2200 metres S M Shivaji Rao Memorial Plate. Ponte Romano moved up gradually from behind and collared the front-runners in the final furlong. Initiation battled on to be second. Diamond Caves had won in a photo finish in her last run and as such, she had incurred a light penalty, which was nullified by the five-kg alloances claimed by A Quereshi. Now sporting blinkers, the daughter of Sir Bruce showed greater keenness by bolting to the front at the final bend and won pulling up. Blazing Fantasy came up with a late bid to be a notable second.
