Full Speed tilts the scales

By Sharan Kumar | 28 Feb 2004 | BANGALORE

Full Speed (Ms Silva up) winner of The Karnataka Trophy being led by owners Mr. Dinesh, Mr. Ramesh Prasad & Mr. Shailesh Shivaswamy & trainer Mr. Ifran Ghatala

Jockey Silva Storai has this habit of keeping the race goers on tenterhooks but she has more often than not, timed her challenge to a nicety. Her victory on Full Speed in the Karnataka Trophy, a rich terms race for horses bred in Karnataka, was yet another instance where the followers of the lesser fancied juvenile had to hold their breath till the very last moment, before letting go of their emotions. The Irfan Ghatala trained Full Speed is owned by the young and enthusiastic team of Shailesh Shivaswamy, Prasad Reddy, Satish Gowda and Umesh, the first three having also been associated with the highly successful Brown Sugar which was their first foray into horse racing as a team.

Lindsay, who had done creditably well thus far, was fancied ahead of Blairgowrie and Full Speed but the son of Burden of Proof who was conceding weight to the last named was not up to the task. The extended trip of seven furlong too did not find favour with his stamina limitations. It was Havana Goodtime who threatened to bring off an upset with her start to finish tactics that nearly paid off. Full Speed who raced at the wrong end of the field, justified his name by coming in full speed to edge out the front-runner in virtually the dying moments of the race. Lindsay threatened briefly in the straight but did not have the strength to carry it further. Full Speed who had the benefit of a good educative run last time out, exploited the pull in weights vis-à-vis the terms of the race. Though he is also by Burden of Proof, he will definitely appreciate a step up in distance. The hype about Blairgowrie, generated by the filly’s maiden win, has been surely misplaced.

The race for maiden three-year olds was run in two divisions. Gaslight went into the BARI Plate (Div I) as the shortest priced horse of the day and the daughter of Gasawar readily justified the solid support, leaving the field for dead on turning for home. Bravo Bedford took the runner-up spot, with Power of Dreams pushed to the third spot after two seconds in her previous essays. The lower division of the race went the way of the Byramjis, with First Trick pulling a fast one, winning at fancy odds. Bred as half sister to the speedy Fast Trick, First Trick showed a good turn of foot and there was an amazing turnabout in her performance as compared to her debut run.

Crown Royal towered over the opposition in the Arundhati Cup, a race for horses rated 40 and above but the son of Mischievous Music perhaps did not relish the extended trip of 2200 metres. Star of Nature led the field from the start and never surrendered the initiative despite being strongly challenged by the favourite. Crown Royal shaped like a winner at the top of the straight but the stamina limitations undid his chances.

There was a good touch on Silver Ring who won at the expense of the well fancied Gold Gift and Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper was not too well placed on turning for home but despite that, finished with a rattle to miss the berth narrowly. Dr Pepper is running into form and she can strike before long. The Stewards, who are always a contented lot, were not happy with the way apprentice A Quereshi handled the long shot and suspended him till July 31 for not improving his position early on and fined trainer Madhav Mangalorkar Rs 20,000.

The Summer Dust Plate was run in two divisions, with the upper division of the race won by the well-backed `Caithraratha who got the better of the front-running Defiant with ease. Son of Fortune, who was also one of the fancied runners, was outpaced in the early part and was never in the hunt thereafter. Imperial Fire won at nourishing odds over a late-finishing Par Excellence in the lower division of the race. The Stewards who were not happy with jockey Christopher, who rode the runner-up, suspended him for two race days. Bunker Buster was the first favourite but the five-year old has always been a low key performer.

The N E Raymond Memorial Plate went the way of lesser-fancied runners in both the divisions. In the upper division, Gem and Goldsmith enjoyed greater degree of confidence but the finish was not confined to these two. Airworthy won at fancy odds at the expense of yet another long shot Fugleman who burst on the scene rather too late to alter the result. Puttanna trained Limitations claimed the lower division from favourite Pelf who had all the chances but buckled in a tight finish.
