Storm The Fort seen in different light

By Sharan Kumar | 13 Mar 2004 | BANGALORE

Storm The Fort (Appu up) winner of The Bull Temple Cup being led by trainer Mr. Eshwer

Michael Eshwer trained Storm The Fort regained the form which had seen him perform with distinction in juvenile million races, when staving off the challenge of Southern Goddess in the Bull Temple Plate which featured Saturday’s races. The son of Excalibur’s Lake appeared to have lost form and there was little hint of his imminent return to form barring his blazing track work and the fact that he was discarding the blinkers. Running a more settled race and positioned in mid-group, Appu waded his way on the long shot through a crowd field in the middle and managed to drive out Storm The Fort to a comfortable win. Southern Goddess could have finished close or possibly won had apprentice Ashwin Rao aided the five-year old mare better. Forced to travel wide all the way, Southern Goddess did cover plenty of leeway on the front races and shaped to strike but lacked that little bit extra to force the decision. In a close finish for the third spot, Winelight edge out Almond by a whisker.

M P Mahaesh trained Most Convincing recorded his third win from four starts when the son of Steinbeck held off a belated challenge of favourite Chant Royal to land the spoils at nourishing odds. Despite having the credentials, Most Convincing was allowed to run at fancy odds as all the money came pouring on Crown Ambassador and Chant Royal. The former bolted while being stalled and was withdrawn from the fray. Bottom-weighted Greenlawn who was placed to strike in the mile long race, had the first run on her opponents in a slow run race, with Most Convincing settled in fourth or fifth position along with Chant Royal who raced behind him. Rounding the final bend, Suraj Narredu on Most Convincing moved quickly and surged ahead of the front-running Green Lawn in the final furlong and held off quite capably from a late-finishing Chant Royal. Charleston, who lost considerable ground at the start, was nevertheless a suggestive fourth.

The March Plate, a race for maiden three-year old was run in two divisions. In the upper division, Spectacular Quest who lost narrowly to good type of youngster Al Qamar, had it easy against Fioredoro who finished an unexpended second ahead of Mount Royal. In the lower division, Darashah trained Boat of Garten easily accounted for on-money favourite Formidable Force who did not live up to the hype or his name, going down rather tamely. Armidale who covered good ground in the straight, is the one for the notebook.

More To Come who sported bandages improved on his previous run when just about getting up in time to get the better of Zabdiel virtually in the dying moments of the race. Plagued by a tendon problem, the progress of More To Come is dependant on how well his legs stand up to training. After a couple of listless runs, Dancing Clear was ready to strike and it showed out in the way money came pouring in the five-year old mare. Dancing Clear did not disappoint and beat the challenge of Golden Gift without much ado. Inscription, who was chopped off the start, came home with a big run to take the third spot.

Generic Emperor made amends for his last start failure when came up from behind to win from Zidane. Zidane was declared to ride by Christopher who was eligible to claim an allowance of 1.5 kgs at the beginning of the day. Because he had completed riding 40 winners when he drove out More to Come to victory, he lost his allowance. But since the declaration were made at the time when Christopher was eligible for the allowance, the club should have permitted the jockey to complete the day claiming the allowance he was eligible at the start of the day because Zidane’s winning chances were adversely affected. Since betting starts on racing in the morning, there would have been many who would have based their selections on the weight that a horse is carrying vis-à-vis the allowance claimed by the jockey and taking away the allowance after the declaration is over and betting has started, places everybody at a great disadvantage.
