Summer Storm brings off an upset

Samar Singh trained Summer Storm brought off a big upset in the Chatrapathi Cup, the feature event of Friday’s races. Alannah, Space Craft and Chamango were expected to battle it out for honors but the first two faded out when the race was on the boil. Summer Storm who shot into the lead in the final furlong just on grimly to win from Chimango.
 
The only reason why Alannah ran as a favourite was because the daughter of Peninne Ridge had run an impressive third behind Fond Fantasy in the Oaks. Though subsequently she had failed as a favourite, considering the opposition, Alannah was expected to be at home over the trip of 2200 metres. However, Alannah turned out to be a big disappointment. After doing the entire front running, Allannah faded out inside the final 350 metres. Summer Storm surged ahead at this point and Chimango too joined issue on the outside and the duo fought out a thrilling battle, with the former just about lasting out to win. Space Craft, who was expected to pose a problem or two, was a spent force when the serious took a serious turn.
 
Racing was lackluster and the eight-event card posed plenty of problems in spotting winners. The prediction was that the punters would get a severe drubbing and the card ran true to predictions. Barring Bollinger and Regal Shot who won as favourites, the rest of the races went the way of long shots. Bollinger who had proved her mettle over a staying trip, came from way behind to get the better of Agnivarsh over 2200 metres trip. Daughteroffortune received plenty of support but she disappointed after raising hopes at the top of the straight. 
 
Dr Nefarious won at nourishing odds in the hands of Silva Storai. Dr Nefarious proved too good for Simple And Sweet, with the rest of the runners left far behind in the homestretch. Another Irfan Ghatala trainee Hunter Jones too won against the run of expectations.
 
The Kokkarebellur Plate, for maiden three-year olds, was run in two divisions. Regal Shot proved too superior for Power of Dreams and Touch of Realism. Divine Excellence claimed the lower division of the race with a start to finish dash. Favourite Suhali packed up after running prominently till turning for home.
 
There was inspired support for Fire’s Dew but the five-year old was never in with a chance as unfancied Good Hope hit the front from the start and drew away from the opposition to register a shock win. Dr Pepper, who was not well placed, finished on to take the runner-up spot. Wovoka finally obliged in the hands of Guruprasad after missing the berth narrowly on numerous occasions.
