Eshwer's wards show their mettle

By Chris Hoover | 29 May 2004 | BANGALORE

Trainer Michael Eshwer’s wards appear to be in good nick. After River God, Starcent and others from his stable proved their mettle in the opening fortnight, Explosivo justified his name just in time to the delight of the rail birds on Saturday. The odds on favourite, who was pitted against mediocre opposition in the Karnataka Police Cup - the feature event run over a distance of seven furlongs - edged out his stable mates Star Alone and Zidane. The one-two-three finish was a just reward for the leading trainer, who has consistently saddled worthy winners at this centre. Eshwer, it may be recalled, won the richest event in the Indian racing calendar for juveniles, the Poonawalla Multi Million at Mumbai through Blurr. Blurr despite her patchy effort in her first start here, is a front-line contender for the Fillies Trial Stakes scheduled to be held this month.

The supporting event, the Yeravada Stud Plate, was claimed by the Hyderabad challenger Nordic Star from trainer Leo D’Silva’s yard. Jockey, Suraj Narredu, back after his stint at Macau, rode a near perfect race astride the winner. Mystic Heights from trainer, S. Padmanabhan’s yard ran a ‘blinder’ and bears watching. The favourite Starcent appeared to have gone down a little after her winning effort on the opening day, while Highness appeared to have needed this run.

Sibelius and Path Of Honour were the two youngsters who impressed in the seven-event card, dominated by fancied horses - five favourites justifying the confidence reposed in them. Sibelius, who had let down his followers in his maiden attempt in the winter season, made ample amends demolishing his seven rivals, including the piping hot favourite Anzello in the Tudor Jet Plate. Anzello, for more reasons than one, dropped position early on and only made his charge after the race was in the safe keeping of the Mallesh Narredu piloted Sibelius. Narredu was fined Rs 2,000 for coming in and causing interfernce to the third-placed Own Elegance (B. Prakash astride) on his inside which in turn impeded Winds Of Fire (D. Gnaneshwar) travelling along the rails while approaching the 200 metres.

Path Of Honour looked a picture in the parade ring and taking into account his suggestive efforts in the winter season seemed unbeatable in the Bhishma Plate. The bookies too endorsed this view and the price quoted on the Karan Singh ward (30/100) was miserly. This was proved right by the manner in which the favourite toyed with his 11 rivals while putting a distance between him and the rest. Path Of Honour is in great form and he is certain to strike when next saddled. Stable mate, Star Angel had it easy, tackling seven under-prepared rivals. Miami Gold from Hyderabad, despite finishing a long way back in second merits attention.

The other winner that caught the eye, emerged from the stables of trainer Irfan Ghatala. Slim Twist installed as the favourite on the strength of his fine mock race had no problems in winning the Patrons Cup in the hands of apprentice jockey M. Mark. The youngster tracked the runaway leader Romance In Rain for most part of the sprint race, before Mark let loose his mount and Slim Twist responded to record an impressive victory. The Stewards of the Bangalore Turf Club fined jockey Yogender Singh, the rider of Way To Wealth, Rs 3,000 for repeatedly changing course and causing interference to Kirstie and also for not excercising control over his mount after entering the straight and thereby allowing it to the outer portion of the race track in the last 200 metres.
