Spectacular Quest (B Prakash up) winning the Colts Trial Stakes (Grade I) being led by trainer Mr. Ganapathy & owner Dr. MAM Ramaswamy

Having missed out at the Fillies Trial Stakes, the M.A.M. Ramaswamy camp had something to cheer about on Sunday. The S. Ganapathy-schooled Spectacular Quest (B. Prakash astride)provided its illustrious owner, his 399th classic victory, when the Placerville-Forest Fantasy colt produced a tremendous turn of speed to surge clear of the field in the Colts Trial Stakes, the second classic of the season.

With the pace of the race having let down the golden-brown colours on Saturday, Minstrel Heights set a decent pace this time, allowing Prakash to settle the eventual champion colt in the rear, while Pesi Shroff struggled to settle the favourite Fantabulous King. As the favourite showed signs of despair when the race was taking on serious proportions, Ganapathy’s wards Spectacular Quest and Star Admiral (Mark Gallagher up) came into contention. The former accelerated in fine style to finish ahead of stable mate Star Admiral. Full Speed, who has improved from his previous run, did well to finish a good third ahead of the Kolkata challenger Apertivo.

It was an amazing run by top weighted Slim Twist (Silva Storai astride) that gave her the top honours in the first division of the Chamundi Hill Cup. Defying a stiff penalty, Silva had everybody in the fray run for their money as Slim Twist accelerated with serious intent to leave the public choices Master Craft and Taurian in a futile chase. Slim Twist is to run in the BTC Anniversary Cup during the Derby weekend and having denied a stiff penalty that of carrying 60 kg, she could be a force to reckon with on a better handicap.

The Inayathulla trained Laguna Blue, running for the first time after a knee surgery, showed that the injury has been forgotten as he won the His Majesty Plate in fine fashion. Jockey Prakash astride favourite Star Empress, who finished fourth raised an unsuccessful objection against C. Ruzaan, the rider of Show N’ Tell for coming on to him in the last one and a half furlong. Pamela Bordes finished an impressive second and in a similar set can win in her next run. Donyses, who warmed up late to finish fifth, is the horse to keep an eye on. Darius Byramji’s other ward, Yutai won in splendid fashion in the opening event and looks a very promising three-year old filly.

An inquiry has been opened into the performance of the Ganapathy trainee Amazing Eyes in the Diablo Plate. Charleston, under its new trainer Arjun Mangalorkar, was handled well by jockey C. Alford as he kept the four-year-old gelding in a handy position before gearing him to the task to win quite comfortably from the late finishing favourite Amazing Eyes, who had a sluggish start. Jockey Mahendran did his best on trainer Dominic’s Snow Deer, but found the others accelerating better. Adventurous World, who had a silent touch on him with a start to finish mission, failed, though finishing a credible third.

Jockey Ravi Biramne, the rider of Ciraja, was fined Rs 5,000 for travelling wide and not infusing adequate vigour in riding out his mount in the Chamundi Hill Cup (Div. II) by the Stewards of the Bangalore Turf Club. Favourite Metalique had to battle it out with Truffles, who went down fighting in this race.

The concluding event saw jockey B. Prakash-ridden Russian Valour overhaul Michael Eshwer-trainee Patriachian (C.Rajendra) who had set a cracking pace, only to fizzle out in the final stages of the race. Jockey Rajendra had started to sprint on the uphill itself and the Don’t Forget Me-Passing Gull colt had no reserves left at the finish when it was most required.
