Lancaster overhauls the challenge of Believer

By Chris Hoover | 26 Jun 2004 | BANGALORE

owner Mr. & Mrs. Zaheer Rattonsey & trainer Mr. Eshwer leading Lancaster (Srinath up) winner of the Karnataka Sub-Area Cup

The Michael Eshwer schooled Lancaster (Glory Of Dancer-Little Beaut) came back to winning form with a hard fought victory over the Dominic-trained Believer in the Karnataka Sub-Area Cup, that featured Saturday’s races. It was Believer with Appu astride that adopted start-to finish tactics, with the favourite, Lancaster in close attendance. With the race taking a serious turn, jockey Srinath’s powerful handling enabled the four-year old colt to overhaul the Dominic ward to win by three-fourth’s of a length. Byramji trained Attorney showed glimpses of returning to form, finishing a suggestive third ahead of Augill Castle.

Srinath seems to have found his touch and the lanky youngster proved his mettle as he went on to complete a double, winning the first division of the High Commission Cup, astride debutant Thursday Nite (Glory Of Dancer-Juanita), with a power packed ride. The Arjun Mangalorkar schooled Thursday Nite, who has recovered from a fracture, displayed signs that the injury was past him. Though coming wide, Srinath brought the three-year-old colt into contention as the Appu-piloted Synopsis, capitalising on a rail run, surged clear, but found Thursday Nite and Berlioz finishing with panache to take the first two places. The Padmanabhan trainee Berlioz was very impressive while finishing a notable second. Keep an eye on him in a seven furlong trip.

Jockey Choksey Ruzaan, the rider of Show N Tell was suspended from July 6 to July 10 for careless riding on his mount. Getting stuck in the field, Ruzaan making a desperate move to get a clear run, shifted and caused severe interference to the B. Prakash piloted Own Elegance, which stumbled. Prakash was the other rider who shared the limelight, clinching a back-to-back double on Starry and Forcing Bid in the golden-brown colours of Dr M.A.M. Ramaswamy. The former capitalising on the wrong choice of favourite in San Gimminanio, won at flourishing odds. The Darius Byramji trainee San Gimminano has come through treatment in both fore legs before this race. B. Shiva trained Silver Victress’ second was an eye catching one. Forcing Bid won very well to justify the favourite tag reposed on him. Tallahassee finished second, ahead of a tiring Lanark.

The Sardar Singh camp pulled off a lucrative double through Power Of Dreams and Madam Marina. The former achieved success for her consistency, changing the pattern of running. The Sardar Singh ward chose to do a waiting race, rather than the usual start-to-finish effort. Favourite Ladyfeelgood was another failure from trainer Darius Byramji’s yard. Frenchman David Badel, who has been facing the ire of the Stipendary Stewards lately, was fined Rs.5,000 for repeatedly interfering with Irfan Ghatala’s Lace And Whiskey (Silva Storai astride) on her outside in the final 300 metres of the race.

Madam Marina (Metal Precieux-Naval Guradian) returned to form with a smashing victory. This four-year-old filly would go up in rating and will be meeting better company in the future. Trainer Imtiaz Sait recorded his first victory as Portal Of Victory, just about managed to pip Pocket Full at the post in the second division of the High Commission Cup. Shakambari, which had a mock run prior to this race, did well to finish third. Keep an eye on her in her next outing.

Jockey Christopher Alford’s ride on Alvinia was viewed cynically by the stipendary stewards and the Kolkata based rider was fined Rs 3,000 for not making sufficient effort on his mount. The Ponnappa trainee, Havana Goodtime having run in better company, found the going easy to beat the field in the concluding event of the day. Corsican Gal, though beaten second, is the horse to follow in its next run.
