Adesina proves her mettle

Adesina (C Alford up) winning the Bangalore Summer Million (Grade III) from Queen Of Fashion (B Prakash up)

Adesina proved an exception when winning the Gr 3 Bangalore Summer Million from Queen of Fashion on Sunday. Adesina is a full sister to River God who is in blazing form as a six-year old and her other predecessors also had proved to be late bloomers. Adesina was a fluent first start winner and justified the public expectation, winning with a measure of comfort. Queen of Fashion was very much in contention but buckled close home, unable to get up to Adesina who got stronger close home. But there is no significant difference between the two of them as Queen of Fashion was conceding three kgs to Adesina and as such, the victory does not greatly boost her credentials right now. In course of time, Adesina should make her mark in the classics.

Sunday’s races belonged to Dr M A M Ramaswamy and trainer Ganapathy who combined to record an impressive five winners out of the card of nine events. For the record, Ganapathy’s tally for the day was six as Courageous Duke was his other winner that did not run in the colors of Dr Ramaswamy.

The Summer Million had an open look because none of the runners stood out in terms of their achievements. Queen of Fashion and Darius Byramji’s Adesina who had served notice of her potential with an impressive debut win, enjoyed more support in the ring. Malesh Narredu pushed Sibelius to the front as the starter dispatched the field for the mile long trip, with Adesina and Queen of Fashion racing in close attendance. Sibelius brought the field into view and then packed up, paving the way for Adesina and Queen of Fashion to fight for honours. Adesina enjoyed the advantage right through, with Queen of Fashion coming tantalizingly close and then running out of steam to be a tame second. Adesina spared a length. Kolkata champion Christopher Alford steered the winner. Alford has been somewhat of an enigma; because he has ridden good races followed by some indifferent rides. He needs to be consistently good to earn wholesome praise in Bangalore. Southern Regent finished on take the third spot ahead of Stilton while Sibelius ran down the field. Interestingly, Kolkata owner Deepak Khaitan has won this race for the last five years beginning with Arrakis, followed by Ansbach, Network, Allies Serenade and Adesina. Some record indeed!

With a surfeit of the best-bred horses in the country, quality and quantity has never been problem for trainer Ganapathy. With the decline of Rashid Byramji as a trainer of outstanding merit, none has been able to beat Ganapathy in the numbers game. Two of Darius Byramji horses were strongly fancied but they bit the dust much to the chagrin of their supporters. Allectus was the betting rage in the Cape Dance Plate (Div I) but the son of Indictment proved far from ready as he packed up when the race was on the boil. Synopsis who had the fitness to recommend his credentials surged ahead but the hopes were dashed when long shot Alcindor from Rashid Byramji’s yard came home with a powerful run to land the spoils at nourishing odds. The lower division of the race saw Smart N Noble benefit from his previous essay to easily contain the challenge of Bellona on whom there was much hype. Maha Rani was a noteworthy third.

Race number 2 for Ganapathy came through Grey Eagle who appreciated the step up in distance, containing the challenge of late-finishing Just Perfect. Courageous Duke whose form was well disguised, had it easy in the Basque Plate where Zimmerman put up a losing battle. Touch of Realism who came in for inspired support did not handle the going well and was a disappointing fourth. Universal Prince had let down as a favorite last time out but proved his worth over six furlongs, hammering the opposition with a great deal of comfort. Ganapathy’s two other winners came through Only for Gold and Ministrel Heights. Only For Gold exploited the pull in weights to get the measure of Highness in the hands of Imran Chisty. Fiorenzza finished third while fancied Capannelle struggled from the word `go’ and finished down the field. Ministrel Heights and Al Qamar was strongly fancied to win the concluding race of the day but the former proved to be too speedy for comfort. The latter who had blazed the track, appeared to have reserved his best for the preparatory workout.

Laguna Blue is without doubt a quality sprinter. The son of Ajaad has recovered remarkably well from a knee-chip operation and proved too speedy for the opposition where Diffidence was in hopeless pursuit of the eventual winner. Pricelessly was not up to conceding weight to her adversaries.
