Star of Windsor gets his due

By Sharan Kumar | 30 Jul 2004 | BANGALORE

Dr. M A M Ramaswamy & trainer S Ganapathy leading Star Of Windsor (Gallagher up) winner of the Governor's Cup (Grade III)

Both Gallagher and Star of Windsor got their due when they were given the privilege of winning the Gr 3 Governor’s Cup, the feature event of concluding day’s Bangalore Summer Season on Friday. The action-packed 24-day season came to a conclusion the way it started: The continued domination of Dr M A M Ramaswamy, trainer S Ganapathy and jockey B Prakash. They have taken a stranglehold on the championship stakes for the last couple of years. Nothing can disturb this combination it seems for years to come.

Star of Windsor is an outstanding performer on the Bangalore track. He has taken a great liking for the local conditions. Initially a troublesome horse whose excitable nature had prevented him from making his debut as a juvenile, Star of Windsor came into his own when he won a race at Mysore but ran listlessly in the Derby. However, there was no doubting his potential. All that he needed was time and guidance from the right sort of jockey. The pacifier blinkers worked wonders with him, as he seemed to have calmed down and learnt to accept the starting gates. Prakash never struck a good partnership with him and was associated with his defeats rather than success. Rajendra got a chance ride on the Bangalore Winter Derby and promptly guided the son of Steinbeck to victory but thereafter, Prakash took over the reins and failed in all his outings, the gelding performing below par. He showed glimpses of his old form in the Maharaja’s Cup and could have won the St Leger had his jockey showed an inclination to do so. Gallagher was happy to let his stablemate Own Vision win under Prakash in a close finish. You can only be what you want to be and if Gallagher finds great relish in the job that he is doing, one cannot complain. Having been such a useful part of the successful stable, Gallagher was allowed the luxury of winning the Governor’s Trophy as the listless Smart Supreme was assigned to Prakash, giving him a reward for his loyalty!

For a change, Prakash did the job of a pacemaker on Smart Supreme, with Adolfito racing in close attendance. Star of Windsor, Baffert, Discman and Assessed spread out behind the front-runner. At around the 700 meters marker, Pesi on Adolfito made his move with Gallagher too getting busy. Adolfito brought the field into view but failed to quicken and Star of Windsor passed him easily and went away for a comfortable win over a late-finishing Assessed who found foot rather late. Baffert was third ahead of Adolfito who seems to have lost his sharpness.

Puttanna trained Pink Cameo completed a hat-trick of wins when easily winning the 1400 metres Leading Owner Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 35. Jockey Imran Chisty had to work hard on Pink Cameo in the early part but once the five year old mare got into her momentum, she flew past the opposition. The Phenomenon’s finishing burst went in vain. Most Convincing seems to have his lost form completely and he may need a long rest to regain his zest. Silva took it easy on Strombolix and stewards who ordered an enquiry into the race gave her the benefit of doubt as the gelding reportedly pulled up lame after the race. Greenlawn got his due reward for his consistency as he took the lower division from Red Mamma on whom Silva was not her usual self.

Trainer Ganapathy had two other winners besides Star of Windsor. Ministrel Girl easily accounted for favorite Pathenon from the Byramji yard. Byramjis have found the onslaught from the gold and brown brigade too hard to tackle. Rashid Byramji and Darius Byramji who have over 140 horses under their wing have just won in all 14 races. This is a very poor strike rate indeed. Fabuleux Dancer looked a beaten cause in the final furlong, as Special Rocket had stolen a march but the front-runner grinded to a halt and the favourite managed to win from a late-finishing Austin Powers. The well-bred Austin Powers is slowly finding his way after having lost condition when gelded.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained The Zamindar managed to stave off the challenge of Poirot to land the spoils in the Champion Jockey Cup (Div I). The lower division saw a big gamble come off on Santosh Rao’s Daughteroffortune. The scorching pace set by Magie Thatcher went a long way in ensuring the victory of the long shot because the daughter of Young Senor was outpaced in the early part but found steam at the right time to win at the expense of another long shot Emerald Ocean. Though the jockey of Emerald Ocean lost his whip at a crucial stage of the race, it would not have a material difference to the outcome because Daughteroffortune was really traveling at the finish.
