Trainer C Girinath leading Miss Ruby (C Harish Up), winner of The Sondur Plate

It was a disastrous Wednesday for the followers of money, with fancied runners failing to produce the desired results at Mysore. Only one favourite obliged in a card of seven races and that win was in the last race of the day by which time most of the racegoers had their pockets drained out and couldn’t dare to put their dime on the favourite.

The speedy Miss Ruby (Eljohar-Suriyothai) who had earned a reputation as a sprinter won the seven furlongs Sondur Plate. Dream of Gold was withdrawn after the filly played up on the way to the saddling enclosure and got injured. Bella Coola was allowed to be withdrawn after the jockey reported sick and a suitable replacement could not be found. The reduced field of seven took the start and Miss Ruby set out in front with Soberano and Honey Buzzard in close attendance. On entering the home stretch the favourite Honey Buzzard tried its best to collar the leader but the relentless Miss Ruby stepped up the momentum and got to the wire first, sparing a little over a length from Honey Buzzard.

M.Bobby’s Prowl King (Libor-Imperial Pearl) was guided by K.P.G.Appu to win the Chamundi Hills Cup. Bahman, Passage of Time and Bejewelled Beauty entered the straight for the final run almost together and while the first named started to fade away, it was Prowl King who took the wide gap through the shortest way and stretched out to score. Bejewelled Beauty surged past Passage of Time in the last couple of strides to take the second spot. The favourite Queen’s Colour failed to raise the required gallop and went down without a fight.

Trainer Darashah had two long shots from the stable; Aahana and Mystic Enchantress winning back to back races. Aahana (Glory of Dancer-Triple Time) carried the top weight to a pillar to post victory, in the Malavalli Plate. Byzantine who was backed to the exclusion of the other runners and Daring Dynamite put pressure inside the last furlong but failed to make an impression. Byzantine finished second, beating Daring Dynamite close to the finish. Shahizaar, Rising Queen and Sequanna were withdrawn before the race.

Mystic Enchantress (Ontario-I Fear Nothing) took a fast jump from the innermost draw and went to lead the field early in the race. Setting a decent pace right through, Mystic Enchantress showed no signs of giving up and kicked on gamely to score an upset victory. Time For All, Bullish Luck and Winning Tale made a vain bid but found the winner out of reach and filled the frame in that order.

Rakesh trained Castle King (Hymn-Castle Beauty) retained its unbeaten streak by winning the Arakalagudu Plate, the opening race of the day. Sand Dune from Eshwer’s yard having won impressively on debut was the piping hot favourite in the race and was widely expected to have a better say over hat-tricker Castle King. Sanatana came into the home stretch first with Sand Dune following closely. With 300 metres from the winning post, Sand Dune looked to take the path between the inner rails and Sanatana but the gap was not enough for it to go past and Imran Chisty had to check his mount hastily. Sand Dune lost its stride and just could not pick up speed after the incident. Castle King in the meanwhile made headway on the extreme outside and went ahead unhindered to win its fourth successive victory. Sanatana took the second spot ahead of Sand Dune, who returned lame on the left fore legs. An enquiry has also been opened into the running and riding of Sand Dune.

J.Saravanan trained Awesome Fighter (Bee’s Prospector) who had missed a winning berth in its last run made amends to lift the Bidadi Plate beating Omega Man close home. Omega Man had surged ahead inside the last 200 metres to gain an advantage and Awesome Fighter came with big strides with renewed vigour and snatched the race in the shadow of the winning post. Huckleberry Finn was sent into the race as the firm favourite after its unlucky run last time where his saddle went loose and finished second but the grey fared badly to finish off the board.

Micheal Eshwer’s Caterina (Senure-Femme Fatale) was the only one to justify the favouritism in the Chaitanya Chakram Plate, the last race of the day. Tornado Force led the field with Winning Desire and Caterina close behind. Winning Desire took up the running from Tornado Force inside the last 300 metres but failed to keep it up when challenged by Caterina. Prezzie and Tusker were withdrawn before the race.
