Secret Girl wins the Varahi Cup

Trainer C.V.G.K.Kishore sent out three winners on Wednesday, through Trafalgar Square, Game Of Life and Flash Flares, all of them piloted by Hyderabad based jockey A.Ashhad Asbar. The wins were all the more relishing for the stable as all the three are at the fag end of their racing career. Game Of Life was a public choice, while the other two were at longer odds. Three favourires obliged in a card of seven races, with the major disappointment being Sand Dune.
M.Bobby trained Secret Girl (Bees Prospector-Satch Boogie) pulled off an upset in the Varahi Cup, which featured the day’s races. Bahman was sent into the race as the ‘even money’ favourite, on the merits of its previous three runs, the last of which was an impressive victory. As the gates opened Infatuation cut the wind, tracked closely by Queen’s Cruise and Secret Girl. Entering the home straight Secret Girl surged ahead but began to drift out of the straight course and jockey M.Rajesh Kumar corrected the drift and went strong with his mount, to score an upset. Infatuation impressed with a runner-up performance and could shed her maiden status very soon. Bahman very surprisingly braced the rear for most part of the race and took the final bend very wide, to finish out of the board. Bahman was reported to have burst its blood vessel during the race.
Flash Flares (Glory of Dancer-Georgica’s Gal) put his age behind and showed plenty of acceleration inside the last furlong to keep Sand Dune at bay, in the higher division of the Diabolical Plate. Sand Dune enjoyed the maximum support before the race at a short price and Time For All being the only other to be in the reckoning at the betting ring, while the other seven horses were at longer odds. Sand Dune went ahead to lead the field within the first furlong in the race and brought the field into the final straight. Flash Flares rallied along the inner rails with a threatening gallop and Sand Dune was visibly under pressure when asked to quicken. Time For All joined the fight but Flash Flares kept the momentum going and went past the winning post three parts of an length ahead of Sand Dune. Time For All was a neck behind in third place.
Game Of Life (Hymn-Shabanaka) justified the favouritism, in the lower division with a big margin. As the heads turned for home, Game Of Life found a free run along the rails and went straight for it. The 8 year old responded well to Asbar’s urgings and drew away from the rest. Fire Vault came with a late run to finish second ahead of Time To Time.
Trafalgar Square (Serious Spender-Allelujah) was quick at start, to hit the front and led all the way to spring a surprise in the Dubare Forest Plate. The favourite Artisan made an effort to collar the winner but could not match the pace and ended up second. Give Me The Money and Attaturk filled the frame. Amazon was withdrawn before the race after he dropped the rider on the way to the gates and headed straight to its stables.
The day started off with M.Pratap Kamath’s Sanatana (Burden Of Proof-Sugarbird) justifying the short price en-route to her maiden victory in the Queen of the Hills Plate. What A Warrior and Always Inspiring disputed the lead till the final bend with Sanatana positioned beautifully, close to their quarters. With around 400 metres from home, D.K.Ashish drove Sanatana to take charge and they completed the formality with ease. Rocket Ronnie was the best of the beaten lot.
S.Santosh Rao trained One In All (Concordial-Fabulous Fortune) who had come down in weights’, tackled the set with confidence, to win the Scone Stone Plate. Rich Rouge and One In All raced almost together in front from the start and once on the straight the two started to fight out, with each trying to out beat the other. With 100 metres left from the finish, One In All picked up speed and raced ahead to register a fine win. On Call came in late to deny Rich Rouge a second place. Sky Empress was withdrawn after she reared up in the gates.
The concluding race of the day, the Oxford Blue Plate, was won by S.Rakesh trained Ice Weapon after some drama near the winning post. Always On Top went ahead near the distance post and was looking good, with Ice Weapon in chase. With about fifty metres from the finish, Always On Top suddenly wobbled and the rider S.John lost his balance on the mount. John tried his best to hang on in the saddle but could not do so and fell off the horse a few feet away from the post and had to be declared a non-finisher. Ice Weapon won the race from a fast finishing Scimitar who fell short by a ‘long neck’
