Camarioca looks good in Guineas

By Sharan Kumar | 10 Sep 2004 | MYSORE

Rashid Byramji trained Camarioca has made rapid strides since her debut during the Bangalore Summer Season and she is expected to have a decisive say in the Gr 3 Karnataka Racehorse Owners' Association Mysore 1000 Guineas, the first classic of the season to be run on Friday. The daughter of Burden of Proof has rapidly moved up on the performance curve by finishing a close third behind Berlioz in the Nanoli Million. She could well provide her sire with yet another classic winner. Though champion jockey Pesi Shroff will be missing in action as he is down with a severe back ache, his replacement should not make heavy weather of the task assigned to him.

Having said that Camarioca looks good, one must qualify by saying that her her task is going to be an onerous one. The field is pretty competitive with Adesina, Queen of Fashion and Star Angel running with an upsetting chance. Camarioca won her debut race though she was far from ready during the Bangalore summer season and that was sufficient indication that she was something special. She confirmed the good impression created by that win with a facile win towards the fag end of the season. But what marked out her as somebody who could be trusted to win classics was the run in the Nanoli Million. She raced a handy third or fourth as Berlioz set up a scorching pace and took her time to get into her stride when the front runner quickened brilliantly on turning for home. Once she found foot, Camarioca was full of running and a stride later, she would gone past Gr 1 Colts Trial Stakes winner Spectacular Quest but the post saved the latter. The mile long trip will suit Camarioca better as her dam Littleover was a proven performer over longer trips, her bag of wins including the Gr 1 Bangalore Derby and Gr 1 Indian Derby. She has done everything right in her lead up work outs and she showed out when she galloped with Berlioz.

Darius Byramji's Adesina has won both her outings in good style. Though she was in receipt of weight from Queen of Fashion when she won the Bangalore Summer Million, Adesina is definitely not short on class. She is by Razeen who is simply the best when it came to siring classic winners with amazing regularity. Adesina has worked well and at this point of time, it is difficult to gague her depth though she has proved to be an exception to her siblings who were all late bloomers. If Adesina were run to expectations of two wins sparkling wins, she could make the opposition really gasp at the finish.

Queen of Fashion has not really proved to be the kind of horse one expected when she won when far from ready at Mumbai. She won her lead up race to the Bangalore Classics in great fashion but flopped badly in the Fillies Trial Stakes, beaten more by the slow pace rather than the quality of opposition that she took on. Now that she has had time to mature further, Queen of Fashion can be expected to be in the thick of things. Jockey Prakash has preferred to ride her ahead of stablemate Star Angel who is in the fray as a final entry. Mark Gallagher will be astride Star Angel who has the blood and performance to back her credentials. But with her jockey more used to letting his stablemate win more often than not even when presented with the opportunity, Star Angel could be comes into the reckoning if her stablemate fades out. Gallagher has so far maintained a perfect record.

Havana Goodtime has won both her starts in handicap races in tremendous fashion and if she can translate that performance in a tough bunch as the one she is running in, much will be heard of her in the coming months.
