Punters lose their way

Mysore racing has certainly gone sour with upsets being par for the course. With most trainers from Bangalore giving Mysore racing a skip either because of poor stakes or to give a break to the horses which have a long winter ahead of them, the fields are filled with horses which are locally based along with that of the gold and brown brigade which has been playing truant thus far. Under such circumstances, it is no surprise that the Byramjis are reaping a good harvest though invariably the presence of the more than one horse from the same stable has put doubt in the minds of race goers as to their choice. More often than not, they find themselves backing the wrong one. May be race goers not being adept cricketers, they invariably fail to spot the ``doosra’’.

The H H Sri Narasimharaja Wadiyar Memorial Gold Cup which featured Wednesday’s races saw Just Amazing ending up as favourite ahead of Breno who had better credentials if only because the daughter of Glory of Dancer had won two races on the trot and her depth had not been sorted out. Super Model who was favoured by the scales also came in for some support. Milan set a fast pace but slackened on turning for home. Breno came through the middle with a flourishing run and went away for an effortless win over Super Model plodded on in the second spot without picking up speed any time during the race. Milan held on to take the third spot while Just Amazing was not spotted.

Pink Cameo cornered all the support in the Chettinad Stud Gold Cup, with Original Sin which had shifted to Darashah yard, allowed to run at fancy odds. Original Sin led from the word `go’ and retired home a facile winner. Pink Cameo was well placed at the start but gradually dropped back but with jockey Imran Chisty riding out, not sensing that something had gone amiss, the five-year old mare was in distress and finished last and barely completed the course. She came back with a fracture and one was not sure whether the doctors managed to save her or she was euthanised. Ecologist was second ahead of Flying Spur who is yet to show his old form which had seen him record a hat-trick of wins last winter.

Star Trustee was the medium of a gamble in the Udhagamandalam Trophy (Div I). Despite a lethargic start, the grey son of the now deceased Green Forest proved too good for the field. Victory Queen played up at the gates and was withdrawn from the fray. Rank outsider Salvik floored the punters in the lower division.

The biggest upset of the day came when Fantasy World, discarded as being no good, sprouted wings as it were and smashed the opposition. A Rs 10 ticket paid close to Rs 4,000 on the Bangalore tote! Fayetteville shaped like a winner when she burst clear of the pack at the top of the straight but close home, she disappeared without a trace. Be A Honey took the second spot ahead of a late warming Emerald Ocean.

Well backed Sweet Charity who won at the expense of Grace And Faith and favourite Lucky Spell and Chablis were the ones to bring some sanity into day’s proceedings. Jockey Appu on Sweet Charity cut across Brave Persian when taking charge, causing jockey Gnaneshwar who had just completed riding 40 winners, a bad fall. In the day’s other action, Serious Attraction won at nourishing odds.
