Flat Out defended his title in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes at Belmont Park, beating Stay Thirsty in the shadow of the winning post. The last time Flat Out hoisted the victory flag was in this race in 2011 and he had not won a race since then. The 6 year old son of Flatter, after lying in mid-field till the last 2 1/2 furlongs, started to make smooth headway, picking up on the leaders and tore down the pace setting Stay Thirsty inside the final furlong to finally nail him at the wire and claim the $ 1 million prize packet. Flat out is trained by Hall of Famer William Mott and ridden by Joel Rosario. The favourite Fort Larned was a well beaten third.

"It looked like he [jockey Joel Rosario] let him pick off a couple of horses on the backside, and he was doing it under a hold," said trainer Bill Mott.  "The horse was just striding out and picking up horses but that other horse fought on well."
