E Dubai’s Fort Larned landed the spoils in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita race track, in a gripping finish with Mucho Macho Man. Fort Larned went past Mucho Macho Man, after 75 yards from start and raced steadily in front, going about two lengths in front 3 1/2 furlongs out. Mucho Macho Man inched closer before the turn and moved alongside the leader. The two were ridden out strongly right through the final furlong and Fort Larned held on to claim the $5 million prize money. Flat Out finished third many lengths behind.

“This is huge,” said the rider Brian Hernandez Jr., who was celebrating his birthday with his first Breeders’ Cup victory. Paying tribute to owner Janis Whitham, Brian added,” just for Mrs. Whitham to give me the chance and stick with me throughout the year”.

"We had to be there near the front and he was ready today," said the winning trainer Wilkes. "He had galloped great over the track. I knew we were good when he broke sharp. That's where Brian [Hernandez] won the race. We broke sharp and Game On Dude broke bad. I trust Brian because the horse trusts Brian."
