L.V.R.Deshmukh trained Kallu Mama (Aussie Rules-Khalimia) made an impressive debut, to lift the Radhey Shyam Jhunjhunwala Memorial Juvenile Million, a five and a half furlongs sprint for maiden two year olds. The manner in which Kallu Mama moved forward in the last 200 metres was very impressive and the grey has a promising career ahead. Skylight Express set out on a start to finish bid with Palm Springs racing in second and Kallu Mama was tracking them in third. Passing the distance post, Skylight Express started to weaken and Kallu Mama was put on top gear by P.S.Chouhan and the youngster accelerated in tremendous fashion to scuttle away. Palm Springs rallied on to take the second spot while Skylight Express finished third.

P.S.Chouhan had another rewarding day, riding three winners. Deshmukh’s Vijaysheel and Netto trained Queen’s Necklace were the other two. Donald Netto saddled a treble with Elenor, Lioness Heart and Queen’s Necklace. The last two named earned their victories on the track while the first named enchased a ‘gift race’, after the original winner Montpelier was disqualified.Trainers  L.V.R.Deshmukh and Leo D’Silva were the other professionals who saddled two winners each.

Bangalore based jockey S.John booted home K.S.V.Prasad Raju’s Indian Epic (Epicentre-Cosmic Swirl), to win the Dr.S.R.Captain Memorial Cup in a pulsating finish. Indian Epic whose last win was exactly a year ago was rated the highest in its career, as the 5 year old went into the race. Odalis set out in front to lead the pack of seven runners, all of them being speedy customers. The favourite Lumiere Blanche tried to take the shortest way on entering the straight but got badly hamperred for room due to the crowding of horses and lost all its chances in the race. Rajkumari and Twentyfive Pips forged ahead in the last 200 metres. Oasis Vision was flashing on fast on the extreme outside and just when it looked like the filly would sweep past all of them in front, Indian Epic weaved through horses and slipped in along the inside to emerge victorious by a proverbial whisker. Rajkumari and Silver Crown finished second and third respectively while Twentyfive Pips and Lumiere Blanche were close behind with the first six places covered in just under two lengths.

Laxman Singh trained Imaan (Valid Concept-Integrity) lifted the Palampet Cup, the opening race of the day. See My Style started off as the favouritebut the shift in odds in favour of stable companion Imaan, towards race time, was a clear indication of which one of them would have a better say in the race. The bottom weighted Amber Flame headed to the front at start and tried to make every pillar a winning one. As the field entered the final furlong, Amber Flame was still holding on to the lead and three horses, Imaan, Smrithiman and Novaya Zemlya were beginning to close up. Jockey Deep Shanker on Imaan worked hard on his mount and managed to get the better of Amber Flame in the last 20 metres. Smrithiman finished third in front of Novaya Zemlya.

D.Netto trained Elenor (Mathematician-Chesterford) turned out to be a lucky winner in the lower division of the Crown Treasure Plate. Elenor and Montpelier, who shared the favouritism, fought out in the last furlong and the latter emerged a length in front at the finish. A stewards’ enquiry was called for, after the race and the original winner Montpelier was disqualified, elevating Elenor as the winner. Approaching the 600 metres board, Montpelier shifted out in a crowded field and Bribe Madi who was just beside, tripped and dislodged the rider. The stewards looked into the interference that caused the mishap and decided to disqualify Montpelier. Elenor, who was beaten outright by Montpelier was the beneficiary of the decision which would probably be a good subject for a debate. Elenor after leading for about 100 metres, settled back to run in third along the rails while Elegant Approach and Sweet Candy forged ahead. Into the last 250 metres, Elenor regained the forward position and Imran Khan was trying hard to kick on. Montpelier came up with a strong challenge and surged ahead under Satish Nayak despite running a bit erratic in the last 100 metres.

L.D’Silva’s Ice Lolly (Chatham Strait-Secret Paradise), a hat-tricker during Monsoon, was back with a bang, decimating the opposition in the higher division. Racing along the inner rails till the final turn, Ice Lolly shifted out and made headway to collar Hurricane Dancer and move away. Hurricane Dancer, Rustic Gal and Sporting Star went past the winning post together to fill the frame in that order. Cannon Law was withdrawn near the gates before the race.

D’Silva wrapped up with a double on Rio Grande (Ontario-Sexy Gal) in the lower division of the Classic Style Plate, the concluding race of the day. J.H.Christopher set out on a start to finish bid on Rio Grande, bringing the field into view on the final straight. As the momentum started to pick up, Rio Grande started to shift left but Christopher kept riding out to keep the 5 year old going till the winning post. Key Note rallied on to finish second while Rose Queen was the fastest finishing towards the closing stages, snatching the third place from Garibaldi

Deshmukh’s Vijaysheel (Alnasr Alwasheek-Spectacular Blood) won the higher division of the Classic Style Plate. The top weighted Kohinoor Supreme was out in front from the start. Jockey P.S.Chouhan worked his way on Vijaysheel in the last 200 metres and surged clear to register an easy win. Naughty Gal got up to beat Kohinoor Supreme for the second place in the shadow of the winning post while the favourite joined the two in the finish to place fourth. Kohinoor King was troublesome near the gates and was withdrawn.

Netto scored his second win with his ward Lioness Heart (Young Senor-Al Falujah), pulling off a stunning upset in the Solitaire Plate. Apprentice Harinder Singh had Lioness Heart track the leader Star Striker till the top of the straight and moved ahead to score a surprise win. Midnight Beauty, Bound for Glory and Star Striker filled the frame.

D. Netto completed his treble with Queen’s Necklace (New Famous-Consuela) in the Starry Scene Plate. Queen’s Necklace and Kianoosh moved away from the rest at start and disputed the lead all the way into the home stretch. Inside the last 300 metres, Kianoosh was ridden hard to keep pace but the effort of P.S.Chouhan on Queen’s Necklace proved more effective to earn a maiden win. Break Away and Camacho Speed finished third and fourth respectively.
