EVEREADY CALCUTTA DERBY PROMISES THRILLS AND FRILLS

The running of the 56th Calcutta Derby promises to be a thrilling affair, what with eight classy runners in the fray for this mile-and-half classic – the winter season’s piece de resistance. The chairman of RCTC, Mr. Deepak Khaitan, also happens to be the vice-chairman of The Eveready Industries India Ltd, the sponsors of the Calcutta Derby. Their continued support of this prestigious Group I race has been a boon to the Club.

There are eight thoroughbred acceptors in this race, vying for the winner’s trophy of Rs one lakh and whopping top prize of Rs. 1.16 crore. The total prize money is a substantial Rs. 2 crore, making this race the highest prize money offered for any race at Calcutta this season.

The race track, under the care of the Clerk of the Course Amit Chaturvedi, is expected to run true and fast. The horses under the care of their respective trainers, ably assisted by the Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. I. Banerjee and his many assistants, are in the pink of health and fitness.

As a part of the added attractions for the day, there is a well-filled card of eight supporting races with The Alokananda Stakes for three-year-old fillies being prominent among them. The first race commences at Noon and the last race is scheduled for 4.10 pm.

There will also be a carried-over Jackpot Pool of Rs. Ten lakh added to the Jackpot pool collection of Kolkata races of Derby Day. The carried-over Tanala Pool of Rs. Two lakh each will be added to the 4th and 9th races Tanala pool collection.
