Mr.Joseph Thomas & trainer Z Darashah leading Keturah (Valdir De Sousa Up), winner of The Rajakumari Leelavathi Devi Memorial Cup

Zareer Darashah trained Ketutah (Burden of Proof-Astrodance) romped home in the Rajkumari Leelavathi Devi Memorial Cup, a six furlongs sprint for 3 year horses. The filly got off to an electrifying start from the outer most draw and hit the front straightaway. Absolute Pleasure, who was equally fancied with Keturah to win the race was also smart at start and tracked the leader in second place. As the field straightened up for the final run, Absolute Pleasure tried to get closer to the front runner but Keturah quickened readily jockey Valdir De Sousa’s  urgings and stretched out to win the race in a smart timing. Absolute Pleasure finished second while Sofast ran on to be third.

J.Saravanan trained Virat (Hurricane State-CareerCollection) was another runner who won in an impressive fashion. The 4 year old went to the lead within the first 100 metres and was never threatened at any stage. Virat who scored an encore, got the sprint distance of 1200 metres in a much faster timing than its previous attempt. Cute Style finished second ahead of Emerald who came with a flourish towards the closing stages.

Saravanan had earlier in the day saddled Absence (Flitch-Share The Spirit) in the higher division of the Spark of Life Plate. Absence, who had finished second to Rosie’s Dream in its last run, was supported well as the favourite. Held back in about sixth position from the start, Absence was pulled out rounding the final bend to make its move away from the crowd. Moving up strongly, Absence joined FlipYour Destiny inside the last 100 metres. The two went past the winning post together and Absence had managed to get its nose in front at the wire. Passage of Time was third another length away.

Trainer C.V.G.K.Kishore and jockey V.R.Jagadeesh combined to score a double. The first win came through Just Great (Serious Spender-Wild Rain) in the Mangalore Plate. Bahman set out on a start to finish bid with Just Great in close attendance. Inside the last 400 metres, Just Great moved alongside Bahman and after a brief tussle, travelled the better. Bahman finished second while the favourite Chantilly Jewel ended up third.

The double came through Napolean Dynamite (Storm Trooper-Pamela Bird) in the higher division of the Ooty Plate, the concluding race of the day. Racing in about fifth position till approaching the final, Napolean Dynamite made a quick move to be behind the leader Rich Rogue and with V.R.Jagadeesh riding out strongly, surged ahead easily. Glitterato and Bighero warmed up late to finish second and third respectively, pushing back Rich Rogue to the third spot.

Always Inspiring (Cool Creek-Awe Inspiring) from Pratap Kamath’s stables was the biggest upset of the day in the Cochin Plate. The 4 year old filly was in the lead right from the start and despiting shifting out slightly on the home stretch, kicked on and finally held on from a fast finishing Fire Vault. The favourite Indian Royalty was third another half a length behind.

C.D.Monnappa trained Montag (Highland Ruckus-Not Tobe Forgotten) earned its maiden win in the division of the Spark of Life Plate. As the field came into the home stretch, Son of The Sun and Maverical started to dispute the lead and Montag creeped up steadily on the outside. Surging ahead inside the last 100 metres, Montag won comfortably to give the rider R.Vaideeshwaran his fortieth winner.

Maverical and Son of The Sun finished second and third respectively. Lesser fancied Happiness (International-Claribel) from Ranjeet Shinde’s yard won the lower division of the Ooty Plate from a fast finishing Little Athena. Stardom Girl, who was in the lead on the home stretch till passed by Happiness, finished third.
