Bratz makes it a no contest

Bratz (Suraj Narredu up) winner of the H.B.Gundappa Gowda Memorial Cup

Rashid Byramji trained Bratz is undoubtedly the best sprinter currently racing in India. She missed the bus in the Sprinters Cup because she was jaded after being campaigned over longer trips repeatedly and her small frame did not take the hard grind though she never shirked from giving off her best. She won the Juvenile Sprinters Million in brilliant fashion last summer and then won twice more, winning the Guineas at Mysore and Hyderabad before flopping at Mumbai. Thereafter, she lost condition and was given a break from racing. Brought back after a long break, Bratz seemed to have grown stronger as evidenced by her paddock looks and the one-sided support for her in the 1200 metres Gundappa Gowda Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 and above, was certainly not misplaced. She towered over the rest and the only question mark was whether she would reproduce her brilliance after the lay off. She answered the question in no uncertain terms, leaving the rest stranded in the final furlong to win with a great deal of comfort from Canny Lad who put in a good effort over a sprint. The others who chased her were a tired lot and it was left to Canny Lady to make a strong run against horses which failed to keep pace. Bratz can continue her winning steak and make a strong bid for the Sprinters Cup if she trains on and she is restricted to sprints. Iberian hit the front as the starter dispatched the field for the six furlong trip, with Bratz settled nicely behind. Suraj Narredu waited with Bratz well into the straight and once he set alight the favourite, the daughter of Major Impact sped away for an effortless win. Canny Lady who raced in the forward bunch, got stronger in the final furlong to edge out Iberian for the second spot. It was a disastrous day for race goers as favourites played truant, and lesser fancied horses gave a bold account of themselves. Apart from Bratz, the only favourite to oblige was Bold Faith who survived a close call from Asiaticus. Bold Faith was quoted at very cramped price but the daughter of Placerville was hard-pressed to win from Asiaticus. Capriani moved from behind with a good run to be a noteworthy third. Prakash who guided Bold Faith to victory, however, was not in his elements on Allied Victory. He failed to maneuver into a striking position early, raced the favourite in the rear and thereafter did not do what a jockey of his caliber is expected to do under the circumstances. He came very wide and despite all the problems, the favourite finished a very close third to the eventual winner Bee For You who had shaken off the challenge of Andalusia in the shadow of the post. Bravo Bedford was well placed in scales to strike in the 1200 metres Royal Tern Plate but there was inspired for Bons Amis and the odds on the Neil Darashah trainee was quite lucrative. Jockey C Alford did well to hit the front from the outside draw and had the favourite dictate the pace but the fact that the gelding was a known bleeder worked on the mind of the jockey as he waited with his horse longer than he should have. Bravo Bedford who got into his stride, sped past him and won with comfort though Bons Amis battled on in vain once overhauled by the eventual winner. Wizzy Noise who played up considerably at the gates, however, saved place money by finishing third. New trainer Neil Darashah had a rewarding day as apart from Bravo Bedford, he had another winner through Ecuador who won at the expense of favourite Moon Tango who did not quicken enough in the final furlong. Sieze The Night who was running over seven furlongs after being campaigned twice over the shorter trip, was full of running and was a noteworthy second. The day did not begin well for punters as the strongly supported Amabelle slackened in the final furlong as lesser fancied Mumbai challenger Warrior Spirit charged home to win the Fair Haven Palte (Div II). The Arti Doctor trained winner had disappointed twice at Mumbai as a fancied runner. The upper division of the race did not run kindly too as the fancied duo of Kinnari and Mystro played truant. It was left to Artic Blast to edge out My Fantasy to claim the honours.
