SILVER STREAK GALLOPS TO A SPARKLING VICTORY

By Mahendra Mallya | 14 Mar 2013 | MUMBAI

Trainer Dallas Todywalla leading Silver Streak (Trevor Patel Up), winner of The Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Cup

Dallas Todywalla schooled Silver Streak (Verglas – Optimal) lived up to expectations and the promise he showed last time out while scoring a fluent victory to clinch the Nadia Mary Homi Wadia Trophy. Trevor stormed past Campeon soon on start and that was it! Silver Streak never let the guard down since and on turning for home maintained a sizzling gallop to completely outpace the rest.

Silver Streak went straight like an arrow, jockey P Trevor keeping her close to the fence. The grey gelding pounded the turf working up a pleasing rhythm and was steaming in at an impressive pace. Trevor was hands and heels all the way and won comfortably. The only reason Campeon managed to narrow down the three-something lead was due to the fact that Trevor had eased up Silver Streak, not that he was going all out in any case. His victory was as authoritative as it was facile and at no stage he seemed getable. Campeon tried hard and found one better.

Insignia, the other contender with some backing, never raised a gallop and was too far back to make an impact. She looked fairly good in the paddock and this run may just provide an educative experience. She is sure to benefit from this run and is expected to give a better account of herself the next time.

Trevor had two other successes earlier in the day. He first rode Hidden Goodness to victory beating hot favourite Montezuma and later partnered Anahi to a well-earned victory in the Haunting Memories Trophy.

Hidden Goodness (Placerville - Riza), trained by SS Shah, had a new owners – Mr Manish P Chirawawalla and Mrs Meenakshi P Chirawawalla making their debut as owners. For the first-time owners, this was a fairy tale opening as Hidden Goodness made the moment special for the brother-sister duo, providing them the sweet taste of victory and the leading-in experience on their first occasion.

Smooth Operator took his time settling down as he led the field but was seen fighting for his head for some distance. Hidden Goodness sat up close with the leader, with Ice Zone and Montezuma close behind. Home Advantage and Lorelei followed them a length or two away.

Hidden Goodness quickened well on straightening up and surged past Smooth Operator without difficulty. He struck a good momentum and was ridden out hard by Trevor. Zervan improved Montezuma to second with a furlong to go. Both jockeys rode their hearts out, but Hidden Goodness proved a tough nut to crack as he galloped on gamely giving no chance to Montezuma also in full flight. Hidden Goodness prevailed by a narrow ¾ lengths to make the day for his new owners.

Anahi (Black Cash – Le Reve) won a very competitive race, as most of the runners for the Haunting Memories trophy fancied their chances in what was an open sprint race. Martinique hit the front with Sharaarat and Catharsis clinging close by, Anahi settled close behind in a bunch along with Snow Blaze, Visionist and Wings of Glory. Delacroix tailed the field all the way and took no serious part in the race.

Into the straight, Martinique didn’t look too convincing to last long and was soon passed by Catharsis. Sharaarat too was weakening and fell back. Anahi came up with powerful strides and after a brief tussle surged ahead to grab the lead. Snow Blaze and Visionist improved well towards the finish, but neither had enough to topple Anahi. Trevor pushed hard and had built a safe lead in the final furlong that saw Anahi through to score a solid victory, thus combining with SS Shah to land the veteran trainer a lucrative double.

Trainer Malesh Narredu was the only other trainer to saddle a double. In fact all his four runners on the day brought something back.  Aigaion and Astromia won their respective races, Mable ended runner-up while Il Moran placed third with nourishing odds on place too.

Aigaion (Razeen – Peresphone) scored his second successive victory from three starts and despite his last start victory was available at 6/1. He surfaced from the mid-bunch to unleash a fiery gallop in the final furlong to score an even better victory than his last.

Que Sera Sera took off in the straight and stole a march over companion Mountain Wind who retired after playing joint leader until the turn. Gates of Heaven rallied along to pose a fight. Su O Moto had all the chances with a clear run but he failed to capitalize. Aigaion started to warm up approaching the distance post and soon stepped up speed to get past them all and win running away. Wolfgang was caught in traffic but when Zervan pulled him out, he bounded forward to cover a lot of ground while finishing second. Wolfgang may not have got Aigaion, but ran well within himself to promise a better outcome next time. Gates of Heaven too caught the eye with a good run third. However, Aigaion was most impressive and didn’t look gettable on the day!

Narredu struck again in the last race of the day with RK Mahesh ridden top weighted Astromia (Rebuttal – Dancing Dreams).  Astromia shot out from draw no 1 and scooted into the lead which he held on right through. He galloped at a good clip with Sariska in second and the others not too far behind. Into the straight, Astromia galloped on freely and surged further ahead. A couple of cracks ensured that he had the momentum going as Astromia didn’t let up and accelerated all the way to ensure victory easing up. Sariska ran on to end runner up with Capri improving towards the end to end in the money.

Hawaiian Princess (Ontario – Hawafiz) scored an encore and this victory just like that of Aigaion was even better than the last. The 12 runners split into two groups of five and seven with Pezzonovante leading the front- bunch comprising Wind Craft, Novak, Menage A Trios and Hawaiian Princess. The other were a couple of lengths away from this group. On entering the straight, Pezzonovante galloped on to work up a three-length lead. Novak was about to start his final run when Hawaiian Princess produced a scintillating burst to simple zip past them all and amass a decisive lead. She simply burst away from her rivals to post one of the most impressive wins on the day. Sun Salutation salvaged some pride, coming from a long way back to run a notable second. IL Moran too ran on to finish a good third.

So True (Warrshan – So Shocking) was the stunner from Narendra Lagad’s yard and strode out resolutely to pull off a start to finish essay. So True was quick to get past Afrojack, a quick starter himself, and led the field into the straight. Rein In Spain, Albuurz and Mable were closest to the two in front. So True increased the momentum once into the straight and Afrojack was finding it hard to cope up. Mable spent time looking for a clear run but when he got through it was all over. So True won with distinction beating a good set of horses, perhaps the best company he had seen. He clocked an impressive 58.94 for the scurry, to win in a hurry. Mable strode out to end second ahead of Afrojack who had Albuurz on his haunches.

Port Blair (Noverre – Shanley) finally scored his maiden victory with ease but suffered post race injury. He stalked leader Captain Smart all the way into the straight and then unleashed an impressive gallop at top speed to draw further and further away from his rivals. He was all by himself in the final furlong and kicked on impressively to win convincingly. Soon after however, Zervan got off the saddle and it was later learnt that Port Blair had returned lame on his right fore. Captain Smart did well to hold on to the runner up berth as Vaile Rouge and Dark Knight finished on fast to clean up the minor placing.

Jen’s Glory (Placerville - Difficult Doll) ran the best race of her life to score her second career victory after a gap of a year and half. She had last won in October 2011 over a mile and quarter trip,  with the same jockey – Kavraj Singh then claiming 3 ½ kilos.

Jen’s Glory took off to a rousing start and led comfortably with Lady Willingdon in chase. The rest were in a close group with Daughterofdestiny in third, followed by Vincero, Kalinga Star. Light My Way was in the rear along with Striking Girl.

Jen’s Glory accelerated well once into the straight and both Lady Willingdon and Daughterofdestiny were falling back.  Jen’s Glory added more turf between herself and her rivals in no time and was ruling the final furlong all by herself. By The Way tried his best to cover the deficit but Jen’s Glory pounded away to score an overwhelming victory by nearly 4 lengths. Light My Way came from behind to pip Daughterofdestiny for the place money.

For the professionals, jockey P Trevor was most successful scoring thrice. Trainers SS Shah and M Narredu saddled a double each.
