Malibu Moon’s Orb made the locals proud while justifying the flood of money that made him the favourite in the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs (USA). On a rain soaked Saturday that had rendered the track officially ‘Sloppy’, Orb came from way behind to win by two and a half lengths.

Orb rallied towards the rear for most part of the mile and a quarter trip while Palace Malice set a clear pace in front. Orb made progress as the field approached the final bend, moving to be sixth or seventh with the front runners beginning to come under pressure. Orb started to shift out slightly when jockey Joel Rosario got busy with a few right handers but was the only one in the field to be gaining ground. Rosario had Orb in the lead quickly and scored an overwhelming victory without having to squeese all the energy. Golden soul and Revolutionary also covered ground from the rear to finish second and third respectively.

Orb gave US Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey his first Derby win. "Means everything to me," said McGaughey in an emotional tone. "I've always dreamed of this day and it finally came. Thrilled for the people who put in so much time on this horse, and of course I'm thrilled for me."

"It's like living a dream," said the in-form jockey Rosario-winner of the Dubai World Cup. "I was so far behind and I just let him be calm and let him be relaxed and he was available to do it all."
